Character Descriptions

Please note: The role of Izzy requires a moment of brief partial nudity (lifting her shirt). The role of Kate requires part of a scene be performed while scantily clad (in a shirt and panties; a la Annette Bening in "The American President.”

KATE – (F, 20s) The child of affluent “old money” New Yorkers, Kate is defensive and neurotic. Self-aware and self-conscious of her privilege, she’s constantly worried that people won’t take her seriously as a writer because she’s an entitled rich girl. She’s been working on the same short story for years, ever since she received (faint) praise for it at college. Absolutely devastated by Leonard’s criticism, she has to decide whether to completely reinvent herself or give up writing altogether. She has resilience born of her intelligence, not her privilege. Secretly has a thing for Martin, but will never admit it.

MARTIN – (M, 20s) Middle-class, definitely not privileged, and has a chip on his shoulder because of that. So emotionally invested in and protective of his own writing that he’s terrified to show it to anyone. Uses his acerbic wit as his defense and, not surprisingly, is very sensitive. Thus far, he’s failing both professionally and financially, but he’s (rightly) convinced that he’s a talented writer who deserves to make it in the world. Martin is tortured by the accomplishments of his colleagues, especially Douglas. Sometimes lets his emotions get in the way of his own best interests. Totally oblivious to Kate’s interest in him, but his infatuation with Izzy seems to be the only thing that can distract him from his passion for writing.

LEONARD – (M, 40s-60s) Charismatic, fierce, brilliant, complicated, celebrity writer, editor, and teacher. Brutally honest to the point of borderline verbal abuse. He genuinely wants to help his students improve as writers, but does not care about their feelings in the slightest. Bitter and detached due to not being as respected in the writing community as he (rightly) believes he should be, he’s contemptuous of almost everything around him, yet he can’t help but get excited about real, honest writing. Travels the world and has as much meaningless sex as he can get in a desperate attempt to feel something, but the only thing that truly makes him feel alive is bringing good writing into the world, whether as a writer or a teacher. Sees much more of himself in Martin than he initially lets on.

DOUGLAS – (M, 20s) The most successful of the four students and, not coincidentally, best connected. He can actually write, but is constantly accused of “name dropping.” Frequently goes on writers’ retreats to top notch writing colonies, which he mostly gets into because of his last name. He comes off as insufferably pretentious at times, but he doesn’t mean to be that way – it’s just all he’s ever known. He tries not to show it, but deep down he’s as vulnerable and desperate for validation as all of the other characters. Like all of the men in this play, he’s attracted to Izzy.

§ IZZY – (F, 20s) Strong, sexy, opportunistic, and confident. Simultaneously the least book smart and the most savvy of the four students. Deemed a good writer from the beginning, she freely admits to not being as emotionally attached to her writing as any of the other characters. She views it as a pragmatic means to achieve her desired ends, namely money, fame, and respect.  Not afraid to use her sexuality to her advantage. Sees opportunity to capitalize on the connections of Douglas and Leonard. Takes genuine pity on Martin.

A tale of seduction set in France among aristocrats before the revolution, this is a classic drama that depicts decadent sexuality, morals, and manipulation played as the ultimate competition, with tragic results.  Former lovers La Marquise de Merteuil and Le Vicomte de Valmont, two merciless aristocrats, compete in games of seduction and revenge, toying with the hearts and reputations of innocents as they do. But when Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the convent-educated Cecile before her wedding night, events soon spiral beyond anyone’s control.  The master manipulators learn too late that even in a world filled with lies, betrayal, and immorality, the most dangerous liaison of all is sometimes true love.

The director seeks a strong cast of articulate actors for this English language adaptation of the classic French novel, which was filmed as “Dangerous Liaisons”.  Age ranges are approximate; all ethnicities considered for all roles.  Acting range and presence more important than any specific “type.”  All roles are open.

The production runs March 29 through April 14, 2019.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Le Vicomte de Valmont (Male, 40s): The playboy of France; former lover of the Marquise de Merteuil; a distinguished, wealthy, and effortlessly charming lothario; enormously self-confident and charismatic; stealthy, manipulative, and determined in the extreme; a proud man used to getting his way; blindsided by falling in genuine love with his latest conquest, Madame de Tourvel. Stage combat experience a plus, but not required.

La Marquise de Merteuil (Female, 40s): A rich widow; ex-lover and now co-conspirator of le Vicomte de Valmont; an extremely shrewd and formidable woman with deep reservoirs of intellect, emotion, and passion, though she guards the latter two characteristics fiercely; a supremely cool and cunning manipulator; impenetrable and unapologetically deceptive; she plays the game better than anyone.

Mme. de Tourvel (Female, 20s - early 30s): A beautiful, virtuous, and deeply religious married woman of notoriously unassailable moral character; Valmont sets out to corrupt her for sport; passionate in her faith and loyal to a fault, Tourvel is relentlessly pursued and seduced by Valmont and, after giving over, is overwhelmed by deep feeling, passion, and ultimately grief.

Mme. de Volanges (Female, late 40s - early 50s): A wealthy widow: cousin and friend of the Marquise; mother of the teenaged Cécile; respectable and spirited if parochial; very aware of her daughter's budding sexuality and mindful of making a beneficial match for her; deeply distrustful and disdainful of Valmont.

Cécile Volanges (Female, late teens - early 20s to play 15): Madame de Volanges' pretty and virginal young daughter, recently released from a convent to enter into a marriage her mother arranged; girlishly exuberant yet tentative, increasingly curious about the ways of the adult world the more she is exposed to it; devoted to her music teacher, le Chevalier Danceny.

Le Chevalier Danceny (Male, 20s): Cécile's music teacher and pet of the Marquise; a charming, eager and naive young man, caught between boyhood and manhood; devoted to Cécile, though not necessarily the most suave, assured, and confident suitor; ultimately, a man of honor. Stage combat experience a plus, but not required.

Mme de Rosemonde (Female, 60s+ to play early 80s): Valmont's elderly arthritic aunt; wise, witty, and sympathetic; devoted to her nephew, but not blind to his ways; has removed herself from the intrigues of the aristocracy; comforting and level headed.

Azolan (Male, late 20s - early 30s): Valmont's valet and also his spy; dapper and droll; does most of Valmont's dirty work and reaps the rewards--both in his pocket and in his bed.

Émilie (Female, mid-late 20s): An attractive courtesan favored by Valmont. Flirty, flighty and gullible. A pawn in bigger games than she can understand.

Sides will be posted at circleplayers.org.

Circle Players holds auditions for a reading of "Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play"

AUDITIONS:

Image result for CIRCLE PLAYERSMr. Burns: a Post-Electric Play
by Anne Washburn

WHEN: Tuesday, August 28, at 7p.m.
WHERE:
Senior Citizens Center, 15 Center St, Metuchen

WHEN: Wednesday, August 29, at 7 p.m.
WHERE:
Circle Players, 416 Victoria Ave, Piscataway Township

Circle Players and director Roxanne Guarino are pleased to announce auditions for a staged reading that will serve as a special fundraiser during their 2018-2019 season.

SYNOPSIS: Anne Washburn’s imaginative dark comedy propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future.

After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of "The Simpsons" episode "Cape Feare" entirely from memory. Seven years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past; 75 years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created.

A paean to live theater, and the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.

We are looking for an ethnically diverse cast of 7 people (5 women, 2 men), ages 21-40, who like to experiment and have fun while acting and feel comfortable singing in front of an audience.

Please note that while the play talks about “The Simpsons” extensively, you DO NOT need to be familiar with the program.  In act 2, scenes from an episode are briefly acted out, but the actors should not imitate the characters, just present an idea of them- ie, Homer is a foolish character, Lisa is a little girl, etc. Act 3 takes place 70 years after the collapse of current civilization, and the characters would not be familiar with the show, only with archetypes like the young hero or demonic villain.

However, familiarity with Washburn’s play is advisable, so do your research. Participants do not have to be professional-level singers, although there will be some singing in the play.

The production will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2018.

If you have any questions please feel free to shoot us an e-mail at circleplayersnj@gmail.com

Shakespeare’s classic tale of a brave and loyal general, who receives a prophecy that he will become king. Consumed by ambition, Macbeth murders the King and takes the throne, but is wracked with guilt and paranoia that spurs his downfall.

The production runs November 16 through December 2, 2018.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

  • Macbeth  A career military man.  Has worked his way up from enlistment to mid-level officer.  Comes from a very poor background, but full of courage and ambition.  Volunteers for multiple tours of duty.  A trained killer with years of PTSD simmering below the surface.
  • Lady Macbeth  Macbeth’s wife.  Strong-willed, but fiercely protective of her husband. The couple desperately wants a child, but have not had any luck.  They are each other’s everything.
  • Macduff  Same age and career point as Macbeth - also in the military.  They are friendly, but fiercely competitive with one another.  Macduff is strong, courageous, but his soft spot is for his wife and children.  The military is just a job to him.  His family is everything.
  • Duncan (also plays the Porter, Doctor and Siward).  A high- level officer in the military, overseeing Macbeth, Banquo and Macduff.  He comes from money and entitlement, and has never had to kill anyone.  He orders other people to do that. Warm heart.
  • Banquo (also plays Seyton).  Macbeth’s friend, about ten years younger.  A better man than Macbeth, but doesn’t know it.  Looks at Macbeth as a mentor. A born leader and loving single father.
  • Lady Macduff (also plays Donalbain, Nurse and others) A loving wife and mother - she once had a career, but life surprised her when she met Macduff and immediately fell in love.  Her family is her passion, but she is a strong fighter.  The scene with her and the murderers will be quite graphic and violent.
  • Malcolm Duncan’s eldest son.  Fiercely smart, admires men like Macbeth and Macduff for their courage but struggles to find that within himself.  Very close with his father.
  • Fleance (also plays Macduff’s son and Siward’s son) Age 8-13.  Fiercely protective of his parents in all three roles, and stands up to attackers despite his youth.
  • Witch #1       (also plays Ross, Murderer and others)*
  • Witch #2       (also plays Lennox, Murderer and others)*
  • Witch #3       (also plays Angus, Murderer and others)*

*The witches, whether playing themselves or other characters that move the plot forward, are always onstage, participating in or watching events.  They are three homeless-by-choice people (could be male or female actors) with a mutual love of the occult and distaste for the petty problems of the world.  They don’t dictate Macbeth’s path; they only encourage what they already see in him.

Looking for one of the witches to be able to play bongo-style drums.  Should be able to improvise based on director’s guidance in rehearsals and then set choices for performance.

The production runs Sept 28th through Oct 14th, 2018.

THE NANCE is a highly entertaining and funny exploration of gay life in 1937, a time when being openly gay was often dangerous. It is an ensemble show in which all characters, except Ned, are part of a burlesque company doing comedy sketches. Expert comic timing required. The ability to play an instrument, juggle or dance/sing, etc., especially for the female roles, is a plus, although not required. Note: the women wear burlesque costumes and do some stripping, but there will be no nudity for them. The stripping is comical rather than sexual.

The auditions will consist of readings from the show.

Cast Breakdown:

  • Chauncey Miles – 30s to early 50s.  An elegant, refined gay man, who dresses and speaks show biz every minute of the day.  In the burlesque sketches, he plays the character of “the nance,” an extremely effeminate gay character, played for laughs.
  • Ned – Brief nudity required.  20s to mid-30s, a handsome, down-to-earth butch gay guy.  He knows who he is and doesn’t like playing games about it.
  • Sylvie – Burlesque performer, 20s to 40s.  She’s got a communist party membership card, and don’t you forget it.  Very opinionated.  Very Brooklyn.
  • Joan – Burlesque performer.  20s to early 40s.  Loves her liquor (maybe a little too much) and loves her job.
  • Carmen – Latin spitfire type, burlesque performer.  20s to early 40s.
  • Efram – 30s to early 60s.  Top banana in the burlesque sketches.  A New York Jew who tolerates communists and pansies, but doesn’t really like them, and makes sure you know it.
