All ages welcome!! Four-legged friends, too!!

*Visit time slots are 30 minutes each and there is a maximum of six visitors in the gallery at a time. Masks and social distancing are required. To those not feeling well: please stay home and get well; we are happy to send you links to view all available works remotely as well as to email you a catalog of works from this show.

Our downstairs variety shop will be hosting THE CAT'S MEOW market featuring local small business vendors. Guests are encouraged to check out the market and hunt for great finds from local makers and object curators!

The exhibiting artists will be on the premises at various points throughout the Opening Reception. We will launch an adjacent online show this week entitled, “ROOTS UP: A Community Fundraiser.” Deep Space artists will donate works for sale and all proceeds will go to a local organization that supports otherwise unavailable skill-building and creative opportunities for youth in our city. We will be working with neighborhood organizations that offer school-based and outside-of-school programs including arts, technology, and other creative enrichment activities. We will be sharing the “ROOTS UP” link far and wide and ask that you help us do the same so that we can raise as many funds as possible. We will be sharing more about this online exhibition soon.

We are committed to supporting and together uplifting one another with the utmost respect, love, and understanding. From the roots up, we seek fertile ground for a mindful, compassion-filled, creatively connected community.

THIS THURSDAY! Opening Reception of CIRCLE THE SQUARE @ Deep Space Gallery in Jersey City

WHERE: DEEP SPACE GALLERY, 77 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City

Please join us this THURSDAY NIGHT, February 13th, from 6-11pm, for the Opening Reception of CIRCLE THE SQUARE, featuring an incredible collection of works by contemporary abstract artists pushing the genre in new directions, each from their own angle.

CIRCLE THE SQUARE includes new works by George Goodridge, Debra Lynn Manville, Orlando Reyes, and Kati Vilim. All four artists will be on the premises—come meet them and ask them about their process!

GEORGE GOODRIDGE:

“Throughout my career, I have always tried to produce works that are surprising, original and playful which rely on invention rather than appropriation. Exploring varied concepts through the creation of new forms, these works may question themes regarding diversity, visual kinetics, identity, object pairings or more narrative ideas pertaining to the concrete world. To ensure invention I rely on the unconscious mind and a form of Cage’s Chance Operations, which has much to offer. This practice is not reliant on our learned awareness nor what we believe to be correct through history. To begin production, after a concept has been decided, I perform a type of meditation that clears my mind of my preconceived notions of geometry. I then create viscerally from a first notion in search for unrealized forms or uncommon pairings that could possibly imitate life in its irregularity. I refer to this process as Unconscious Geometry.”

George is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan where he taught Visual Techniques. He also attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was awarded the position of Senior Technical Adviser to the Student Body.

Best known for his three-dimensional stretched canvas works, he has relocated several times between New York, Los Angeles and Miami. George has been awarded both the Art Center South Florida’s Studio Program and Print Lab Residencies as well as the Eileen S. Kaminski Family Foundation Residency at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ. His work has been represented in the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, the NSU Art Museum, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the South Korean Embassy in Washington DC, as well as numerous commercial galleries, Scope, Pulse and other satellite Art Fairs. Multiple purchases and commissions have been produced for United Airlines, The Related Group, Banyan Capital and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Notable press includes Land Escape Art Review, White Hot Magazine of Contemporary Art, the Examiner, the Miami Herald and Art South Florida with artist talks on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and the Syndicated News Network. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

DEBRA LYNN MANVILLE:

“I am a self-taught painter, although I have taken many art classes and received training in interior design. Bright colors and abstracted forms are the mainstay of my work. I have followed graffiti as an art genre since I was young since the letters were always so difficult to read that they become forms in and of themselves that take on new symbolic and communicative meaning. My own artistic language has evolved over the years to become increasingly nonobjective. Color and shapes communicate a language that becomes more complex as they interact with one another in a single piece. I use the term “silent” to express art that really catches my eye -- work where the juxtaposition of forms and angles “quiet” the periphery in a distinctly commanding way. “Silent” works are the type of art that I love to see, share, and produce.”

Debra is the sole founder and manager of the extraordinarily popular instagram profile @1MillionDiamonds, which features abstract and nonobjective artwork from artists around the world. She was the Red Bull Arts Resident in Detroit in 2018. She currently lives and works in Central NJ.

THIS SATURDAY!! Opening Reception of BIRTHDAY SUIT // New works by Thomas John Carlson

Opening Reception: BIRTHDAY SUIT // New works by Thomas John Carlson

WHEN: Saturday night, November 2nd, from 7-11pm
WHERE:
DEEP SPACE GALLERY, 77 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City
ADMISSION: free

Deep Space Gallery is very pleased to present BIRTHDAY SUIT, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Jersey City-based artist Thomas John Carlson. Come help us celebrate the the artist’s birthday as well during his Opening Reception this Saturday night. Beats on tap all evening courtesy of Deep Space resident DJ Scott Free.

See what Thomas has to say about BIRTHDAY SUIT below~

“There are ways that people suit and address themselves that change over time. Experiences and relationships change a person’s perspective about themselves and the world year by year. Birthdays can be uncomfortable. They act as poignant milestones from which to compare one’s old and new selves at each new year. They serve as a time to address one’s expectations of the year ahead. These works are a reflection of that dynamic struggle” -- TJC

About the Artist

Through bold use of color and surreal imagery, Thomas Carlson aims to evoke a vivid dream world where our senses are limited. Memories and subconscious material are surfaced without the tools of the awakened mind’s faculties. Images and narratives are beyond the real world. Meaning is suggested but is not clear to either the beholder or even the imaginer. Thomas is also the founder and director of Jersey City Art School.

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday at this very special solo show and birthday celebration!

THIS SATURDAY: Opening Reception of solo shows by SEAN 9 LUGO & LAYQA NUNA YAWAR @ DEEP SPACE GALLERY

WHEN: Opening Reception, Saturday night, September 7th, 7-11pm. Both artists will be on premises -- come meet them and ask them about their work! The exhibitions will be on view through Saturday, September 28th, with a closing reception on that day.
WHERE: Deep Space Gallery, 77 Cornelison Ave, Jersey City

Deep Space Gallery is very pleased to present our new exhibition featuring solo shows by two artists whose inimitable styles are recognizable in public spaces from Jersey City, Newark, NYC and Philadelphia to El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. La Lucha features new works by Sean 9 Lugo and Counter/Public features new works by Layqa Nuna Yawar. The artist duo are coming back together in Jersey City for the first time since their two-man show at the legendary 58 Gallery nearly a decade ago.

Those who cannot attend the opening can contact the gallery at deepspacejc@gmail.com for a catalog of available works, a schedule of the month's programming, or to schedule a gallery visit. See more about the exhibitions in the artists' own words below.

La Lucha // New works by Sean 9 Lugo:

"No stranger to struggle, La Lucha is my most personal body of work to date." It delves into what's really behind the mask, touching on [sensitive] subjects that many are too afraid to admit to. It is the depression we are unable to face; the corners that we grew up on; the uncertainty of where our next meal will come from; the five finger discounts we [sometimes hesitantly] get; and the beat downs that come our way, all of which is worth it in the end due to the love in our lives."

Counter/Public // New works by Layqa Nuna Yawar:

"The Counter/Public is the space where the subaltern change culture...and create counter narratives that uplift our voices and fit our own definitions of who we are. The Counter/Public is the switching from English to a private language so you can curse at your boss, say tender things to your lover, express the complexity of your being. The Counter/Public is an internal space for healing, a private realm that deals with our trauma and a strategy of survival against governments that dehumanize and scapegoat our existence. Counter/Public is a collection of new and recent work that speaks about these truths and exists as a fold-in to my public mural work. These paintings, drawings and sculptures focus on my own migrant history in order to speak about a larger communal experience of people of color living in the USA at a time of crisis."

About the Artists:

Layqa Nuna Yawar is a migrant artist, muralist and educator born in Ecuador and based out of Newark, NJ, USA. His large scale murals, paintings and projects question injustice, racism and xenophobia, while celebrating cross-cultural identity and migration in order to amplify the silenced narratives of people of color around the Americas and the world.

Sean 9 Lugo describes himself as a brown boy representing the duality of both Latin and American culture and experiences through masks that can either misconceive or stereotype perceptions. His art has a street element, but he does not consider himself a street artist. His images are meticulously done by hand, but he does not consider himself a fine artist. He is self-taught and creates art for himself, not for others. He describes his art as not fine-tuned because struggle and imperfections are the experiences echoed in his work.

EN ROUTE
a two-room solo show featuring Pajtim Osmanaj

WHEN: Opening Reception, Saturday, June 8th, from 7-11pm
WHERE: DEEP SPACE GALLERY, 77 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City

Pajtim doesn't dwell on borders.

EN ROUTE speaks to your journey. The exhibition, co-curated with KV Projects, features a new look at Pajtim's works on paper, installation, and ceramic sculpture in various permutations of color, steepness, and contrast. These busy bodies of work are incredible!

A word from the artist

PAJTIM OSMANAJ

Pajtim was born in 1990. Raised in Istog, Kosovo, he attended the Art Academy of Kosovo to study painting before immigrating to New York in 2013, to study and make art. He started showing his work while employed as a construction worker in Manhattan, worked as an art handler in Chelsea, and gained the attention of an audience. He has been featured in publications including the New York Times, Artnet, and The Knockturnal.
