I Hate This (a play without the baby)

by David Hansen

Featuring: Jason Szamreta

David and his wife Toni learn at her 30 week check-up that their unborn child has died. Jumping back and forth between two timelines, David tells the story of the 36 hours between learning this truth and the birth of their first child, as well as the year that follows—detailing the frustration, recrimination, guilt, sorrow and ultimate acceptance of their son's death.

Harry Clarke

by David Cale

Featuring: Clark Carmichael

Harry Clarke is the story of a shy midwestern man who feels more himself when adopting the persona of cocky Londoner Harry Clarke. Moving to New York and presenting himself as an Englishman, he charms his way into a wealthy family’s life, romancing two family members as the seductive and sexually precocious Harry, with more on his mind than love. With his spellbinding and emotionally nuanced storytelling, Cale has created a riveting story of a man leading an outrageous double life.

Forever

by Dael Orlandersmith

Featuring: Nicole Callender

Inspired by her experiences in Paris at the famed Père Lachaise Cemetery—the final resting place of such legendary artists as Richard Wright and Jim Morrison—award-winning playwright/performer Dael Orlandersmith explores the strange way we form powerful bonds with people who, though unrelated to us by blood, come to feel like family. Orlandersmith investigates the complex legacy she received from her mother—a legacy of bitterness, abuse, and frustration, but also of poetry, music, and art.

Want to Write A Solo Show? New Workshop Enrolling Now

We're Thrilled to Announce a New Solo Show Creation Workshop!
VOICES ACROSS AMERICA
Co-Facilitated by 3 Solo Performers
Limited to 9 Participants

WHEN: Voices Across America will begin May 25 and runs Monday evenings for 6 weeks from 6-9pm.
WHERE:
via Zoom
FEE: The suggested fee to participate is $120, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Instructors:

  • Will Nolan creator of Hooray for Lady Land! Gay History for Straight People!
  • Ami Brabson creator of Phenomenal Women and A Change Is Gonna Come
  • Aizzah Fatima creator of Dirty Paki Lingerie

Luna Stage is launching a nation-wide virtual solo show creation program, Voices Across America. The project will be collaboratively facilitated by three solo performers via Zoom, and was inspired by Luna Stage’s American Voices series which premiered last year and featured world premieres of solo projects in the company’s MainStage and Studio theaters.

Nine participants will be selected for the first cohort of this unique program, which will be co-facilitated by three solo performers simultaneously, offering participants the opportunity to evolve their own pieces with support from multiple perspectives. Instructors include Ami Brabson, whose solo plays with music Phenomenal Women and A Change Is Gonna Come both performed on Luna’s MainStage; Will Nolan, whose Hooray for Lady Land! Gay History for Straight People! was scheduled to open at Luna on March 14 and has been postponed; and Aizzah Fatima, creator of the award-winning Dirty Paki Lingerie.

Participants in the solo show creation workshop will be selected from across the country. “A central aspect of Luna’s mission has always been to reflect the diverse voices of our community,” said Luna’s Artistic Director Ari Laura Kreith. “It’s interesting to discover how COVID-19 shifts our awareness of who is ‘inside’ our communities.”

The workshop will culminate in a virtual showcase performance featuring everyone's work.

The New Jersey-based regional theatre recently launched a series of 10 Minute Playwriting programs, which filled within minutes. The theatre announced the workshops to its mailing list, and assumed it would attract local participants. However, they were surprised to discover that participants came from across the country as well; some were former locals who continued to follow the company, while others had never visited Luna but were interested in the company’s work.

“This moment in time offers a unique opportunity to connect and listen to one another,” Kreith said. “We hope that by inviting a geographically diverse group of participants into this workshop, we will begin to build a platform that allows us to empathize across our divided America.”

This nation-wide virtual solo show creation program will be collaboratively facilitated via Zoom, and was inspired by Luna Stage’s American Voices series, which premiered last year and featured world premieres of solo projects in the company’s MainStage and Studio theaters.

It will culminate in a virtual showcase performance featuring everyone’s work.

This workshop is designed both for experienced theatre artists and also for non-theatre professionals who feel they have something powerful to communicate at this moment in time.

Participants will be selected from across the country.

Interested applicants should email a brief paragraph about why they’re interested in participating, where they live currently, and where they consider “home” to annika.franklin@lunastage.org by May 18.

Luna Stage's survival depends on ticket revenue and contributions. If you have the resources to do so, we hope you will consider making a tax deductible gift to Luna.

From Ms. O’Shea, "The Meditation Collection is inspired by my interest in mindfulness and meditation. I hope that the pieces will serve as a reminder to take a few moments each day to quiet the mind against challenges, to restore balance among the priorities of your day, and to be present in every moment. The Atmospheric Collection is inspired by my interest in the uncontrollable natural forces in our lives. I hope that the pieces will serve as a reminder to appreciate these forces, to enjoy their beauty, respect and wonder at their power, and to appreciate how we fit into the balance." (Right: Estasi)

THIS SATURDAY!! Opening Reception of BIRTHDAY SUIT // New works by Thomas John Carlson

Opening Reception: BIRTHDAY SUIT // New works by Thomas John Carlson

WHEN: Saturday night, November 2nd, from 7-11pm
WHERE:
DEEP SPACE GALLERY, 77 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City
ADMISSION: free

Deep Space Gallery is very pleased to present BIRTHDAY SUIT, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Jersey City-based artist Thomas John Carlson. Come help us celebrate the the artist’s birthday as well during his Opening Reception this Saturday night. Beats on tap all evening courtesy of Deep Space resident DJ Scott Free.

See what Thomas has to say about BIRTHDAY SUIT below~

“There are ways that people suit and address themselves that change over time. Experiences and relationships change a person’s perspective about themselves and the world year by year. Birthdays can be uncomfortable. They act as poignant milestones from which to compare one’s old and new selves at each new year. They serve as a time to address one’s expectations of the year ahead. These works are a reflection of that dynamic struggle” -- TJC

About the Artist

Through bold use of color and surreal imagery, Thomas Carlson aims to evoke a vivid dream world where our senses are limited. Memories and subconscious material are surfaced without the tools of the awakened mind’s faculties. Images and narratives are beyond the real world. Meaning is suggested but is not clear to either the beholder or even the imaginer. Thomas is also the founder and director of Jersey City Art School.

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday at this very special solo show and birthday celebration!

WEST ORANGE ARTISTS HAS SOLO SHOW IN CHATHAM

ANITA DELLAL: ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

WHEN: on display through October 1. Drip Coffee is open daily until 6:00PM except Sunday until 5:00.
WHERE:
Drip Coffee, 262 Main Street, Chatham, NJ.

From the artist:

Prior to becoming an artist, I raised my family and taught at Washington Elementary School in West Orange for 30 years. After retiring in 2004, I was able to pursue my desire to paint in a non-realistic style.

When I began, skies were my subjects. I loved their constantly changing colors and patterns. With time, cracks in walls, decaying buildings, configurations of rocks and fallen trees attracted me. These became the basis for my paintings.

I’ve worked with oils and acrylics over the years. Recently, I’ve been working with with oil paints and cold wax, using palette knives and various tools to create textured paintings that may or may not have definite structure. They evolve from my thoughts and emotions. They may be peaceful and quiet, or may give the viewer a feeling of energy and movement.

Experiencing the pleasures of continuing artistic growth has been gratifying. I look forward to many more years of doing so.

PASSAGE THEATRE PRESENTS TWO SOLO SHOWS

UnbornWeb1038x483

Bicycle-FaceWeb1038x483

WHEN: FEBRUARY 8 – 17, 2019; Friday through Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm
WHERE:
The Mill Hill Playhouse, 205 E. Front Street, at the corner of Montgomery Street in Trenton, NJ. On-street parking will be available.
TICKETS: $27. Student, group and senior discounts available.
Both To My Unborn Child: A Love Letter from Fred Hampton and Bicycle Face contain adult language and themes.
To purchase tickets, call (609) 392-0766, or visit www.passagetheatre.org

Passage Theatre Company, Trenton’s Barrymore Award-winning professional theatre company, will present two plays this February as part of their audience-favorite Solo Flights series. To My Unborn Child: A Love Letter from Fred Hampton, written and performed by Richard Bradford and directed by John Doyle, will perform from February 8-10. Bicycle Face, written and performed by Hannah Van Sciver and directed by David O’Connor, will perform from February 15-17.

To My Unborn Child photoIn To My Unborn Child, Richard Bradford revives the voice of Fred Hampton, a visionary Black Panther murdered by Chicago police at 21 as he lay by his pregnant lover. Hampton preached a humane, compassionate revolution against racist brutality, child hunger, poverty, and capitalism. This powerful play about change, love, and legacy sheds fresh light on a little-understood period of our country’s history, and was originally produced by Iron Age Theatre.

Set in Philadelphia and framed by a feminist theory class taught one hundred and fifty years in the future, Bicycle Face takes audiences on a multidisciplinary, multimedia theatrical joyride through the feminist movement and its unlikely relationship with the bicycle. Using live music, projections, and puppetry, Hannah Van Sciver navigates the ever-changing landscape of feminism, censorship, and cycling. This show was originally developed and produced by The Greenfield Collective.

Passage’s Artistic Director, Ryanne Domingues, says, “I saw To My Unborn Child: A Love Letter from Fred Hampton in the 2017 Philadelphia Fringe Festival and was blown away by this part of history that I had never heard before. I had learned about the Black Panthers in my high school history class, but this show gives us their story through the lens of one incredible man, and reminds us how relevant their legacy is to what is happening today. Similarly, when I came across Bicycle Face, I was immediately intrigued by how the history of women’s cycling tells a much broader story about gender in today’s world. Both of these shows remind us how important it is to know our past so that we can better navigate our present and change our future.”

To My Unborn Child: A Love Letter from Fred Hampton was conceived for the purpose of engaging folks in a conversation of ideas,” says Richard Bradford, the play’s writer and performer. “And to shed light on an important but not often talked about hero.” Passage is thrilled to welcome him back after his appearance in this season’s hit Salt Pepper Ketchup.

Bicycle Face photoHannah Van Sciver says, “I first wrote and performed Bicycle Face in 2015 – I’d read an article online about this invented woman’s malady from the 1890s, and it became this glorious entry point for thinking about “women” and “feminism” in the past, present, and future. Every time I resurrect the show, it has to change a bit, to stay in conversation with the present. Ultimately, Bicycle Face presents snapshots of three women trying and sometimes failing to fight the patriarchy with the tools of their time period. It examines how, as things get easier, sometimes they get much harder too.”

THIS SATURDAY! Closing Reception ~ “The Golem: Objects of Security” by Ryan Bock in Jersey City

clip_image002

clip_image002[5]

Closing Reception
Golem: Objects of Security
by Brooklyn-based artist Ryan Bock

WHEN: On View: September 29 - November 3, 2018. Closing Reception:  Saturday, November 3, 6-11pm
WHERE: DEEP SPACE GALLERY, 77 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City

Spend an evening with the artist—ask him about his paintings, drawings, sculptures, and on-site installation. This is Bock's final exhibition of 2018—come help him make this year a smashing success and make one of his pieces part of your personal collection!

“My natural human inclination toward security is stifling my growth. I’m attempting to propel myself out of my comfort zone, off a cliff in both my personal and professional life in order to reach a higher comprehension of where I stand,” Ryan Bock says of his forthcoming exhibition, The Golem: Objects of Security. Paired with the artist’s shifting perspective is his presentation of previously unexplored mediums and the reimagining of practiced ones.  Shapes of antiquity meet those of contemporary society and iconic symbols are abstracted and separated from their contexts. These new works include painting, sculpture, drawings, and experimental short film.

clip_image002[7]

Inspired by the myth of the Golem of Prague, particularly by the German horror film that the exhibition’s title adapts, Bock confronts the duality of self-protection. It is said that the rabbi brought the Golem to life to protect the Jewish ghetto, but in time the guardian turned against its creator, desecrating the people and places in its path.

The things our contemporary society considers foundational to life—medicine, information technology, economies, stability—are the fabric of The Golem.  Rather than accepting them as assurances of comfort and protection, Bock exposes their inherent vulnerability to compromise and thus the dangers they pose to the very security we rely on them for.  Bock’s works give form to unexposed dark matter, calling attention to the webs and mazes that distract us from reflecting on our own contemporary condition.

Bock cautions us: Anything we view as armor may also provide the means of our demise.

Ryan Bock’s sixth solo-exhibition, The Golem: Objects of Security, includes new works, installation, and experimental short film.
