Art House Announces Online Art Competition

Art House Gallery Art Competition: Pressing Pause—Living Life While Staying Put

WHEN: Submissions close Friday, May 15th at 5pm EST.

Sponsored by Mack-Cali Realty/Harborside JC, this online art competition is open to artists currently based in New Jersey.

Selected by a panel of curators, the winning artist will receive $500, their work will be exhibited as part Art House’s group show for the 30th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) in October 2020, and they’ll be featured on the Art House Productions’ website and social media channels for one month.

The selection panel includes Andrea McKenna, Artist and Director of the Art House Gallery; Loura Van DeMule, Artist; Miguel Cardenas, Artist and Art Educator; and Cheryl Mack, Director of Bridge Art Gallery.

Gallery Director Andrea McKenna says, “As much as artists need their solitary time to work, they also need connection to their peers and to their community. Speaking through art about the current times is what makes art relevant and artists relatable. The practice of art and the sharing of the work helps us all get through to the other side of this experience.”

Pressing Pause: Living Life While Staying Put

COVID-19 has us all experiencing life very differently. Never before have we had to collectively and indefinitely quarantine away from friends and family, stand 6’ apart, wear masks, and rapidly learn new skills in order to survive. Hand sanitizer and toilet paper are valuable commodities. Lysol and bleach have earned our deeper respect. Cities are at a standstill, with closures everywhere and there is a mounting death toll that we’re reminded of each day. The unthinkable is happening right before our eyes and, as visual artists, all we can do is stay home and hopefully continue our practice.

Anxiety, stress, fear, boredom, panic are now quotidian, yet, we must keep living. We must adapt to unemployment or working from home, and do our best to take care of ourselves and others, pay our bills, make tentative plans for the future, and steal moments of joy throughout the day. How and what are you, the artist, creating in the time of quarantine? How is this new duality of life being expressed? How are these changes being expressed visually?

Full submission guidelines are available on https://bit.ly/pressingpauseart. Please contact gallery@arthouseproductions.org with any questions.

WHERE:
262 17th Street in Jersey City

Art House Gallery is proud to present the work of Lane O’Shea. Seen recently in Art House’s group exhibition, ‘Lost, Then Found’ as part of the 29th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour in October 2019, Ms. O’Shea was chosen for a solo exhibition in the Art House Gallery that will display works from two complementary collections, the Meditation Collection and the Atmospheric Collection.  (Above: Seaside Snow Squall, Boardwalk Icicles)

From Ms. O’Shea, "The Meditation Collection is inspired by my interest in mindfulness and meditation. I hope that the pieces will serve as a reminder to take a few moments each day to quiet the mind against challenges, to restore balance among the priorities of your day, and to be present in every moment. The Atmospheric Collection is inspired by my interest in the uncontrollable natural forces in our lives. I hope that the pieces will serve as a reminder to appreciate these forces, to enjoy their beauty, respect and wonder at their power, and to appreciate how we fit into the balance." (Right: Estasi)

Loss is a feeling no one escapes. It takes its shape in losing a one of a kind heirloom to experiencing the death of a loved one. That indescribable feeling of emptiness can leave a person feeling helpless. You are not alone. The effects of loss can be devastating or it can be transcending. It is up to you to determine your experience and your outcome. It is up to you to find peace. This exhibition illustrates this challenging, yet rewarding, journey.

Join us as we celebrate the LGBTQ+ Community with this exhibition of artists whose work demonstrates the passion they embody for this momentous occasion!

The iconic Stonewall Inn in New York City was a haven for the LGBT community and in the early hours of June 28th,1969, they were raided by the police as they often were.

The constant harassment and abuse made them react and fight back. Riots began and lasted for several evenings and thus ignited the LGBT Liberation Movement.

In commemoration of this night...the first Pride March was organized by the Gay Liberation Front the following year, in June of 1970, and it is considered to be the most significant event leading to gay liberation and the "modern" fight for LGBT rights.

In the last 50 years, the LGBTQ Community has had to fight for their rights and acceptance in just about every area there is: the government, the military, the arts, sports, education, entertainment, marriage equality and much more.

Beth Achenbac, Luis Alves. Alina Balseiro, Miguel Cardenas. John Crittenden, Jim Fallon, Donald Gallagher, Nicole Gamboa, Robert Koch, Jo-el Lopez, Vincent Minervini, Lucy Rovetto, Debashish Sinha, Bryant Small, Arthur Velwest
