SOPAC and SouthNEXT Co-Present Virtual Conversation on Controversial Arts

Evolution vs. Revolution: Controversial Arts and Their Effect on Society
WHEN: Thursday, October 15, at 7:30 PM
WHERE
: online
Audience are requested to register for the free event at https://www.sopacnow.org/events/evolution-vs-revolution-10-15/ to receive a ticket link

The South Orange Performing Arts Center in partnership with SouthNEXT is proud to announce a Five-Part series of virtual conversations called Evolution vs. Revolution centered on challenges our society is facing that are causing unrest throughout the country.

Come see and hear an expert panel engage in conversation as we look at societal change through the lens of Arts and Performers. Representatives from arts and entertainment fields will come together to discuss their views on controversial art designed to effect change. Theater, Sports, Visual Art, Music, Spoken Word, Video and more will be discussed in the upcoming October 15 event.

Barbara Heisler (CEO, Glass Roots), Anthony Smith (Music and Event Producer), Bobby Brown (Attorney and former Professional Football player), and Angela Kariotis (Seton Hall Professor and performance artist and leader) will be on hand for what promises to be a lively conversation. Stephen Schnall, the founder and producer of SouthNEXT for the past 6 years, will moderate.

The Evolution vs. Revolution conversations have an overarching theme of societal change and how quickly, or slowly, it is ushered in by the needs and desires of groups of people with a specific affinity.  When we look at the history of societal change it seems to evolve at a slow pace, until it doesn’t. Does it take a revolution to spark the birth of the new consensus or should we expect change to evolve over an extended period? What is possible? What is probable? What are the repercussions?

Join us for a series of dynamic panel discussions that investigate evolution vs. revolution in diverse areas of our modern life, including global climate change, identity politics, racial concerns in our schools, and equitable wealth distribution and the job market.

Perspectives from various viewpoints is the hallmark of the series, and panelists will grapple with provocative questions about the multi-faceted issues we face as Americans and how change will impact us all in some way. Subsequent conversations will be held monthly November-February and will be announced in upcoming weeks.

Barbara Heisler has served as Executive Director of Glass Roots since 2014 and as CEO since 2017. After implementing program innovations, in 2019-20 Barbara led GlassRoots’ ambitious expansion and capital campaign as the organization moves to its new 25,000 sf home in Newark later in this year. Barbara’s professional background includes more than 30 years of experience in non-profit, education and government management.
Angela Kariotis has brought her unique performance style across America and beyond to venues such as The University of California- Los Angeles, Contact Theater in Manchester, UK, Legion Arts in Iowa, the Off-Center in Austin, TX, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Hip Hop Theater Festival in New York City. Angela couples her masterful performances with cutting-edge residency work. Kariotis is committed to anti-racist pedagogy, literacy through the arts, theater for social justice, and art-making as a liberating practice. Currently, she teaches in the communication program at Seton Hall University.

WORKS BY JOAN SPEARE ON EXHIBIT IN LIVINGSTON

The Arts Council of Livingston is delighted to announce an exhibit of

Joan photo

The Works of Joan Speare

WHEN: January 4th through February 26th. A reception for the exhibit  will be held at the show, on Monday, January 8, from 5 to 7 PM at Livingston Town Hall, S. Livingston Ave. (next to Police Station). The public is cordially invited to meet the artist and view her works.
WHERE:
Livingston Municipal Gallery, Livingston Town Hall, 357 S. Livingston Ave., Livingston

A native New Englander, Joan relocated to Charlotte, NC, to avoid the winters.
While in North Carolina, Joan fulfilled a promise to herself to take up painting when she retired. She found a studio and studied with Lee Baumgarten and Denise Torrance, internationally acclaimed artists. Several of her oils have been
shown in juried shows around Charlotte, NC. Some of her pieces are in private
collections, and one, of a frog,  is traveling around the world in a display to bring awareness to the danger of their extinction by chemicals.

But family ties beat sunshine. Ms. Speare moved to Livingston to be near her daughter and family when her son-in-law was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away. She is grateful to be here to help her daughter raise her two sons. “It’s much easier being a grandparent than a parent and much more fun.”
Joan found the art world here and joined the Livingston Art Association as well as the Arts Council of Livingston, becoming its Vice President of Visual Arts. She took on the responsibility of publicity for the ACL Art Gallery as well as the Livingston Community Players.

Joan is presently studying with Laurie Harden at the Livingston Community Center. She is participating in several local art shows including the ACL Gallery, Studio Montclair, Gaelen Art and the Livingston Arts Association, winning an honorable mention for an abstract in their fall 2014 show.

Currently, Joan is enrolled in the Rutgers University Master Gardeners curriculum, volunteering at various Essex County parks and the annual Garden Sale in the spring.

"Artistic expression nourishes my soul.  I am pleased to share my art with you.”   —Joan

Mission Supports the Borough's Arts Community

Leonia Arts' mission is to support, stimulate, enhance, promote and connect the arts within the borough and to other communities. The grassroots organization supports the arts by connecting the various diverse artists and creative groups in the town often called the “Athens of New Jersey.” Membership in Leonia Arts is free and available for artists, arts organizations, arts groups, and patrons of the arts in Leonia.

The organization’s web site features an Artist Link page open to Leonia artists in all disciplines. Artists, who are members of Leonia Arts, may link their web site to the Leonia Arts’ web site. Borough artists interested in linking their web site and/or contact information to be listed on the relevant subpage, should send the following to info@leoniaarts.org: name and type of artist (photographer, actor, dancer, writer, etc.), one photo (optional), web site URL (optional), and a short bio or profile no more than two brief paragraphs in length.
