Northern NJ Community Foundation Invites Artists to Apply to ArtsBergen's Studio Sneak Peek

Studio Sneak Peek

The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation's (NNJCF) ArtsBergen invites artists living or working in Bergen County, New Jersey to apply to Studio Sneak Peek. Three artists from the visual and performing arts will be selected to participate by creating pre-recorded videos in their studios discussing and demonstrating their creative process for a recent work, a current unfinished project, or their practice in general.

The selected artists will be featured at the next NNJCF ArtsBergen Connect the Dots networking event on April 21, 2021, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Connect the Dots Studio Sneak Peek will showcase established and emerging artists in their studios and offer a live Question & Answer and interactive networking time to colleagues, art enthusiasts and the community-at-large.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must live or work in Bergen County, New Jersey and be at least 18 years of age.
  • Artists must be able to pre-record a five-minute video in their studio or workspace to present on Zoom at the Connect the Dots' Studio Sneak Peek on April 21.
  • Artists unable to use their regular studio or workspace, who are making and creating at home or elsewhere because of COVID-19, are also eligible.
  • Each work shown on the video must be an artist's original work.

The deadline to submit an application is February 26, 2021.  Applicants must register at https://artsbergenstudiosneakpeek.artcall.org, complete a brief online application, and upload the following:

  • one short demonstration video introducing themselves and their work (maximum 26 mb in file size with MP4 mov and avi files supported)
  • one work sample of artwork, a clip of scenes, music, or dance, among others as a jpeg, jpg, png, gif, mp4, mov, or avi file forms with a maximum size of 25 mb
  • a resume or bio

Artists selected to participate in the Studio Sneak Peek will receive notification by March 15.  Each artist selected will receive compensation of $250.

Why should artists apply?  "The Studio Sneak Peek provides an excellent opportunity for artists to present themselves, their work, as well as the creative process to a new audience.  This forum can also help artists drive traffic to their websites to encourage sales or connections, explained Danielle De Laurentis, Associate Director, Northern New Jersey Community Foundation.

"During Studio Sneak Peek, artists network with other local artists and community members.  In addition, their participation showcases and elevates the local talent in Bergen County, New Jersey."

For more information about Studio Sneak Peek, call (201) 568-5608 or contact artsbergen@nnjcf.org.  Complete details will appear on the application site, https://artsbergenstudiosneakpeek.artcall.org, on February 5.

Creative Hackensack’s “The Utility ARTBox Project”

The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation's (NNJCF) ArtsBergen has issued a call for artists, living or working in New Jersey, for Creative Hackensack's "The Utility ARTBox Project" in Hackensack, New Jersey. ArtsBergen, an initiative of the Englewood-based NNJCF, is working with the Hackensack Main Street Alliance's Creative Arts Team (CAT) and the Hackensack Cultural Arts Department to select five artists and/or artist teams to design and paint murals on five utility boxes in the city.

WHEN: Applications are due Monday, April 17, 2017.

Complete application information may be found HERE.

Selected artists will be notified if their design has been accepted.

For further information, contact NNJCF's ArtsBergen at artsbergen@nnjcf.org or 201-568-5608.

For further information about the Main Street Business Alliance, visit uppermain.org. Follow Creative Hackensack and the Hackensack Creative Arts Team on Facebook for updates about events and activities at www.facebook.com/CreativeHackensack/.

The Hackensack CAT is a group of artists, merchants, organizational leaders and public officials collaborating to implement a creative placemaking plan for the City of Hackensack. Creative placemaking integrates arts and culture into a neighborhood, town, or region to build community and livability and boost the local economy. The Utility ARTBox is among several projects the CAT has identified to implement the Creative Vision Statement developed with input from various members and sectors of the community.

Litter Prevention Through Art

The project's five goals are:

  • to create public awareness of the negative effects of littering through public art;
  • to beautify the community of Hackensack by incorporating public art into ordinary elements of the city such as utility boxes;
  • to provide art-based work opportunities for local artists to celebrate their work through public showcases;
  • to engage and delight passersby and residents; and
  • to endorse arts and culture as a powerful tool to transform, connect, and serve the city of Hackensack.

Funding for the project is provided in part by a Clean Communities Grant, with a primary focus on litter prevention. Each box will serve as a canvas for a painted mural illustrating a clear message of anti-littering, litter prevention, the damages of littering to a community and how anti-littering behavior enhances an area. The incorporation of elements that engage the public is encouraged.

NNJCF's ArtsBergen is recruiting the artists, managing the submission process and working with its partners to implement the project. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply and either work or live in New Jersey. A committee will select the artists based on creativity of design, experience, artistic excellence, and how clearly the theme of litter prevention is communicated.

WHERE:
West End Park in Long Branch

Interested artists will be asked to send photos or JPEGS of their work for consideration (those who participated in the 2015 show need not submit material for review). There is a non-refundable entry fee of $50 due at time of registration, and locations of tents or stalls (measuring 100 square feet) within the park will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

Interested in entering electronically? Have any questions? Contact event coordinator Mare Akana at makana.art@gmail.com with your info, and we’ll send you all the details.

Steve Cote - Mixed MediaThe clocks have been sprung ahead; the snow shovels have been cautiously stored away for another day. If you’re an artistically inclined person who lives in and around the New Jersey Shore, you probably can’t wait to put away winter’s drab watercolors — and to welcome Memorial Day Weekend 2016, while enjoying a day of light, color, activity, music, friendly people and good times in the arts-friendly fresh air of an exciting new season.

Returning for an 18th annual edition, the annual Art in the Park event transforms the corner of Ocean and Brighton Avenues into one of the largest outdoor art happenings in the state; an art and fine crafts fair that emphasizes unique and original works over commercially produced “art sale” merchandise. (RIGHT: Painter Steve Cote shows off his ribbon awarded in the category of Mixed Media, at the 2015 Art in the Park event in Long Branch. Photo credit: Christopher Anthony)

Sponsored by the Long Branch Arts Council and Long Branch Historical Association, with support from the City of Long Branch, Art in the Park takes place within strolling distance of an eclectic menu of restaurants, taverns and eateries.

Last year’s edition was among the most successful ever, with more than 60 participating artists enjoying beautiful weather, great turnout, live music and a chance to display — and sell — work that they created themselves, with no commission taken by the event organizers. The people who bring you Art in the Park invite you to be part of this great local event in the artist-friendly neighborhood of West End, a fun, creative, energetic place to spend some hours on any day or night.

Art in Park 2015 COLORWe’re seeking submissions in the categories of Works on Paper, Works on Canvas, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Photography, Ceramics, and Special Materials (including wood, glass or plastic). Please note that the organizers of Art in the Park are not seeking submissions in the categories of jewelry, fiber or fabric art at this time. So whether you’re a seasoned professional or a relative newcomer, this can be a great opportunity to get your work before the public, in a supportive and highly visible setting that offers honors in each category. (LEFT: The 18th annual Art in the Park outdoor art and artisanal crafts fair returns to West End Park in Long Branch on May 29. Photo credit: Christopher Anthony)

Guest juror this year will be Barbara Rivolta, a potter, jeweler and instructor who has worked as a museum professional for many years, including a stint as Asian Art Collections Coordinator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Based in Forked River, the graduate of Drew University (whose own work combines ceramics with precious-metal clay and other materials) currently serves as a board member and committee chair at Ocean County’s John F. Peto Studio Museum.

The Long Branch Arts Council is a partnership dedicated to working with the city government, civic and business organizations and the arts community to re-establish the City of Long Branch as a thriving regional center for the arts. Our aim is to accomplish this goal by attracting artists and arts organizations, by coordinating fundraising and development efforts, by establishing arts education programs, and by presenting arts-oriented events that draw upon the natural resources, accessibility, historic assets and “people power” that are unique to our beloved city.

ARTISANS’ FAIR AT HISTORIC SPEEDWELL IN MORRISTOWN

Artisans’ Fair at Historic Speedwell Village

WHEN: Saturday, April 26, from 10 AM to 4 PM
WHERE: Historic Speedwell, Moristown

Try your skills at different mediums, and experience the arts in a beautiful and unique setting. Artists specializing in weaving, blacksmithing, painting, and jewelry will be on site, answering questions, and offering hands-on activities.

At 2 PM, Ashley Scotto, Historic Program Specialist, will conduct a Historic Fabrics presentation. There will be a tactile component of the presentation with paper marbleizing and quilting crafts available.

Don’t miss the remarkable special exhibit in the Vail House by our honoree artist, Abagail Eckert. When asked about her vision for the piece, Endless Memory, Eckert stated, “Firsthand accounts have the power to transport the modern person into a time beyond; Stephen Vail wrote copious diary entries throughout his life, and as I perused through these endless papers, the man ceased to be simply a face in a portrait. His words leapt off the page, forming a robust character who lived, breathed, and slept in these spaces (at Historic Speedwell).” Eckert added, “Endless Memory represents the spirit of the person who opened a portal to a world we can never fully know through their words. The gauzy fabric of Stephen’s ‘soul’ are covered in quotes pulled from his diaries that depict the love, loss, cares, and worries of the human condition that are so incredibly relatable to today. This artwork is meant to embody the frailty of human life and the contrasting eternal life of the written word as it’s passed down from generation to generation."

Historic Speedwell strives to make the connection that the lessons of yesterday can help us make decisions for today and tomorrow. For more information on the Artisans’ Fair, or to be register as an artisan, please call 973.285.6550.

The Morris County Park Commission features one of the region’s best park systems in the state of New Jersey. It currently protects and maintains 18,730 acres at 38 distinct sites plus offers a year-round calendar of events and activities for all to enjoy!
