Support Artistic Expressions Program Before June 30 Deadline

Support our Artistic Expressions program that helps adults with developmental disabilities before our June 30 deadline.

The Hunterdon Art Museum's Artistic Expressions program is so much more than a class. Through the program, students discover an avenue of multi-sensory stimulation, have the chance to enhance critical social skills by working with teachers and other students, and experience an open studio with close personal instruction and guidance from dedicated art teachers.

An open studio means it’s all about choice.  Students are presented with a variety of materials and are encouraged to express their own vision in this fun, supportive class. The instructor offers guidance on using the materials, but the students are in charge of making all the creative choices.

The benefits of the Artistic Expressions program are significant. Students show improvements in cognitive function; make significant progress in fine and gross motor skills including hand-eye coordination and dexterity. And they gain confidence by creating and completing their own unique works of art.
Simply put, Artistic Expressions touches lives in ways that are simple, yet profound.

We seek your help in supporting our Artistic Expressions program. To meet our fundraising goal, we need to raise $5,000 by June 30. We ask you to consider making a gift of $500, $100, $50 or whatever you can afford, to support this unique—and greatly needed—program.

Click here to donate, and please note in the message box that your generous gift is for Artistic Expressions.

by Holland Taylor

Featuring: Noreen Farley

ANN is an intimate, no-holds-barred portrait of Ann Richards, the legendary late Governor of Texas. This inspiring and hilarious play brings us face to face with a complex, colorful and captivating character bigger than the state from which she hailed. Written and originally performed by Emmy Award-winner Holland Taylor, ANN takes a revealing look at the impassioned woman who enriched the lives of her followers, friends and family.

All the Rage

by Martin Moran

Featuring: Harry Patrick Christian

Martin wondered for most of his adult life about anger. Surely he should have more rage about the crime he experienced as a boy, shouldn't he? Everyone thinks so. The question haunts him and sends him on a quest from west of the Rockies to south of Johannesburg. Jumping from dream to memory to fact, he finds himself in an electric encounter with his fuming stepmother, lost in Africa with a guide who can't read maps, in a room translating the details of an asylum seeker's torture. With equal parts honesty and entertainment, ALL THE RAGE attempts to solve an ancient human riddle: How is it that one moment we might reach out in compassion and the next...kill?

"... brilliant, funny and touching." —The New Yorker

Simultaneously a best friend, mentor, psychologist, and surrogate mother to the many young people who call her "Auntie," Charlayne Woodard is childless only by biological standards. Told with penetrating grace, candor and wit, THE NIGHT WATCHER is the story of a woman who chooses not to have children-only to be pulled into the real-life struggles of kids of all ages, races and backgrounds.

The Only Thing Worse You Could Have Told Me

by Dan Butler

Featuring: Scott McGowan

Billed as a "whirlwind tour of the gay American landscape," this one-man show juxtaposes ten predominantly gay characters in fourteen vignettes. Moving, funny and eye-opening, THE ONLY THING WORSE... turns inside out the experiences and perceptions surrounding gayness in modern America. The characters question, contradict and especially challenge one another's credo of what "being gay" really means.

"...you certainly don't have to be gay to appreciate Butler's people ... recognizable life as lived to straight or gay alike." —The New York Post

COMEDY SHOWCASE THIS FRIDAY IN BASKING RIDGE

Colton Biondi Comedy Performance

Stand-up Comedy Showcase

WHERE:
English Barn. Farmstead Arts, 450 King George Road in Basking Ridge
ADMISSION: $10 suggested donation.
For questions, please call Kathy Harris, Operations Manager, at 908-636-7576 or send an email to admin@farmsteadarts.org.

Farmstead Arts presents a Stand-Up Comedy Showcase Performance in the English Barn, featuring professional comics Kurt Zimmerman, Tim Eli and Basking Ridge’s Chris Sicoli alongside local teens and adults trying their hand at comedy, some for the first time! The Showcase is open to the public.

Among the evening’s performers will be budding comics who are participating in the Stand-Up Comedy Workshop offered at the Farmstead in the month of June. Student performers include Ridge High School senior Spencer Charleson and sophomore Arohi Dandawate, Carol Baldessari from Monroe Township, Denville resident Jeff Hovey, and returning for his second year in the workshop, Ed McCarty from Bridgewater, a frequent performer in Lord Stirling Theater productions at the Farmstead.

Workshop instructor Kurt Zimmerman returns to reprise his role as mentor after a resounding success with the 2016 workshop at the Farmstead. Zimmerman “loves watching people get in touch with their inner funny and sharing it with the world. This class is always a treat to be a part of because of the growth I see in the participants. ” The weekly classes offer an intensive introduction to the techniques of writing and performing original material. By Friday night, students will have worked to develop and polish material, developing a dialogue with the audience, how to read laughter, or lack of laughter and getting comfortable in front of the microphone. Headliner Zimmerman has been making audiences laugh at Catch a Rising Star in the Princeton Hyatt, Grovers Mills Coffee House in West Windsor, Parx Casino, Rock N Joe’s in Union, NJ, Greenwich Village Comedy Club and the Stand in NYC, Sarcasms in Cherry Hill and Hightstown, Comedy Cabaret in Philadelphia, and LOL Comedy Club in Paulsboro and Glassboro. He will be joined by fellow professionals Lynne Emonds, Tim Eli and Basking Ridge’s own Chris Sicoli.

The barn is wheelchair accessible.  Anyone anticipating the need for additional accessibility services is requested to make a request by sending an e-mail in advance to admin@farmsteadarts.org.

Funds for these events have been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program Grant administered by The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission.

BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY TO PRINCETON TO PICNIC AND EXPLORE THE STONY BROOK

WHERE: D&R Greenway Land Trust’s Johnson Education Center, One Preservation Place, Princeton

Explore the Stony Brook at Greenway Meadows Park with a Walk and Picnic at D&R Greenway Land Trust’s Johnson Education Center.  The walk will be led by Jeff Hoagland (below, right), Education Director, Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association.

Bring your own picnic—beverages and dessert will be provided. Eat on the terrace before embarking on an exploratory walk.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAChildren will search for and learn about creatures that live in the stream. Water shoes/boots are recommended for wading into the water. This fun evening outdoors is for the whole family.

“We’re delighted to partner once again with the Watershed Association for this annual activity that begins at our Johnson Education Center and travels to the banks and riffles of the Stony Brook,” says D&R Greenway President & CEO Linda Mead. “D&R Greenway Land Trust and the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association are the two big environmental groups of the region and there’s a lot of synergy between our groups. We do different work, but our work is complementary.”

clip_image002In fact, D&R Greenway was founded in 1989 through the collaboration and vision of the Watershed Association, Friends of Princeton Open Space, Regional Planning Partnership, and the Delaware & Raritan Canal Commission. D&R Greenway’s founders realized the region's open space was threatened with extinction and their vision for an organization dedicated to the preservation of the region’s remaining natural areas led to the creation of a small grassroots organization that completed the first nonprofit acquisition using Green Acres funds in 1992. Hoagland remembers when “The Greenway Project was nestled at the Watershed Association, perfectly complementing our environmental advocacy and education programs.”

“Keeping water clean, safe and healthy is at the heart of the Watershed Association’s mission,” says Watershed Association Executive Director Jim Waltman. “As a consequence of our work, thousands of acres have been protected through our advocacy efforts, including lands along the Stony Brook where the July 6 walk will take place. Since 1949 the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association has worked to protect water and the environment through a concerted collection of activities including speaking for clean water in a wide range of legal forums, educating people about our place in the watershed, and putting citizen scientists in the waterways to monitor their health.”

“D&R Greenway permanently preserves watershed lands and large-scale landscapes, thereby preventing the loss of open space to development,” says Mead. “We provide the public with appropriate access to these areas, encouraging active lifestyles and a greater appreciation of the natural world, and also seek to inspire a conservation ethic promoting policies, educational programs and partnerships that result in a public commitment to land preservation.”

Hoagland has dedicated more than 30 years to the Watershed Association and environmental education. As Education Director he leads workshops and programs for teachers, students and the public, partners with local organizations and municipal groups, speaks at community events and inspires others to love the natural world. He is most at home out there, in the wild.

MYRON WALDEN Quartet

  • MYRON WALDEN - Tenor Sax
  • Akiko Tsuruga – Organ
  • Bob DeVos – Guitar
  • Chris Smith - Drums

"Listening to saxophonist Myron Walden is like watching Daedalus fly too close to the sun-it's exhilarating to see him glide past chord changes and conventional jazz structures, but there's the constant fear that if he goes any higher, his wings will melt. Somehow, that never happens." ~ Aidan Levy, Jazz Times

"Nat Hentoff, writing for the Wall Street Journal, said "Myron Walden...is simultaneously the most insistently personal and instantly accessible musician of his generation." The Wall Street Journal also commented on Walden's distinctive brand of commitment "Mr. Walden is one of our more primal and emotional players-on any instrument. He brings the raw intensity of a Mississippi bluesman to modern jazz."

MIKE BOND &  KRISTINA KOLLER

"Kristina Koller is a very original contemporary jazz vocalist, one that anyone interested in jazz, or for that matter progressive music, needs to hear..." Kristina Koller

Mike Bond is known for his smooth virtuosity, which spans the breadth of jazz, blues, latin, swing, bossa nova and contemporary classics.

Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight! is the promise of Broadway’s most loved musical farce. Pseudolus, the Roman slave attempts to win his freedom by helping his master woo the pretty girl next door. But the road to romance is never smooth, as our crafty hero dodges a riotous succession of stunning surprises, mistaken identities, wild chases, bawdy humor, and zany characters—all in the pursuit of love and freedom! This fast-paced, witty and irreverent romp features infectious tunes and laugh out loud lyrics by musical theatre legend Stephen Sondheim. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum may be a 50 year-old musical based on 2000 year-old plays, but it remains a breath of fresh comic air, perfect for a summer evening!

In addition, the Surflight Theatre will offer a series of concerts from artists including the Coasters, Drifters and Platters to jazz musicians. Comedy shows are also offered at the Theatre.

The beloved Surflight Theatre and Show Place Ice Cream Parlour in Beach Haven, N.J. will celebrate a grand reopening on June 23, ushering in the theatre’s 68th year. The Surflight Theatre and its five- building compound are under new ownership by Al Parinello Entertainment LLC, a New Jersey business owned by Garden State native and Old Tappan resident, Al Parinello, who has deep experience in the entertainment and radio space.

The beloved theatre was created in 1950 and has won numerous awards as a theater. Its 68th year will begin with new sound and lighting, a newly renovated stage, new curtain and a range of plans for improvements over the next five years. The Surflight Theatre has always been vital to its shore community, representing a wholesome venue for family fun and memories shared by multiple generations. It served as a community hub, a place where aspiring actors got their start, a return to simpler times and the essence of summer ‘down the shore for hundreds of thousands of fans.

“We’re thrilled to be up and running for the 2017 summer season and in better shape than ever,” said Al Parinello, who also owns a home in Brigantine, New Jersey. “The Surflight Theatre is an iconic landmark in Long Beach Island that attracts people from all over New Jersey and beyond for its wholesome, family-friendly performances and entertainment at its ice cream parlour. Indeed, our Surflight Theatre harkens back to a time when life was simple and summer family fun was in abundance. That’s what has made the dramatic closure and now return of this theatre so special and very emotional for many -- it is part of so many families’ history and memories. The Surflight Theatre is synonymous with warm, wonderful experiences associated with summer, community, pride, family and fun.”

“Having the Surflight Theatre and the Show Place Ice Cream Parlour back in business is wonderful for our community,” said Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis of Beach Haven. “Beyond our beautiful beaches, these establishments are the lifeblood of our community. These past two years when the Surflight Theatre was dark, our community lost a great deal of spirit. We couldn’t be happier having our beloved Surflight Theatre and its Show Place Ice Cream Parlour operating.”

The Surflight Theatre expects to host nearly 25,000 guests this season, based on advance ticket sales. Its adjacent Show Place Ice Cream Parlour is expected to bring in sales of $350,000, all of which helps support the Theatre’s operations.
