FEBRUARY EVENTS @ THE WATERSHED INSTITUTE IN PENNINGTON

WINTER WEED COLLAGE RELIEF WORKSHOP

Join us for this unique two-part workshop as we partner with The Seward Johnson Atelier. The first part takes place at The Watershed Institute, where we explore weeds, trees, and other plants in winter. We will collect and assemble our collages. Then the second part takes place at The Seward Johnson Atelier where you will take part in the devesting of your sand mold and observe the pouring of your aluminum relief!

WINTER FAIRY FESTIVAL

Come celebrate the mystical creatures of the winter Watershed! We will dance, play magical games, listen to winter tales, and create fairy art. MAPLE SUGAR BRUNCH

Join us Saturday, February 29 for this sweet fundraiser. Discover the history, folklore, and science of maple sugaring. Take part in our taste test and head out to our trees to learn how they are tapped. The highlight of the morning is a delicious pancake brunch, served with fresh, local maple syrup. This year, proceeds from the Maple Sugar Brunch help support our Camp Scholarship Fund. Sign up for a stack of pancakes and you’ll be creating friendships and unforgettable memories for some lucky campers. HOPEWELL BOROUGH PLASTIC BAG BAN
Even though the New Jersey Legislature didn't pass a statewide ban on plastic bags, straws, and other single-use items during the past session, some local towns took action.

About a dozen fifth-graders from the Hopewell Elementary School and staff from The Watershed Institute joined the voices on Jan. 2 in urging the Hopewell Borough Council to finalize a ban on distribution by businesses of single-use plastic bags. The Council voted unanimously to have the ban go into effect on Earth Day (April 22, 2020).

This engaging and enlightening course returns for a fifth year! Get ready for the song of spring by learning about our feathered neighbors. Includes three Saturday morning field trips, to Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, the Watershed Reserve, and Rogers Wildlife Refuge. Instructed by Luke K. Learn about Northern Saw-whet Owls and what local researchers are doing to conserve these tiny predators.

Tyler Christensen, an ornithologist with the Wild Bird Research Group, has been conducting field research on the Watershed Reserve for several years. Tyler captures, measures, and bands the owls as he gathers information about their autumn migration.

These sessions are in partnership with the Wild Bird Research Group. Space is very limited. Children must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must be comfortable walking on uneven ground at night.

TRENTON RIVER DAYS FAIR

Join us for a celebration on the Delaware River! This free event includes food and educational activities for the whole family! Explore games and exhibits about the life of the Delaware River, and then enjoy a boat ride or paddle along the river's banks. Live music and entertainment will be provided by Son 7 and performers from the Trenton Circus Squad.

Participants can help plant a wildflower meadow, and discover River-Friendly tools and habits to bring home.

CREEPY SPIDER HUNT

HOMESCHOOL NATURE CLASSES

This semester is all about insects! We will cover:  Insects 101, pollinator insects, aquatic insects, predatory insects, insect adaptations, monarch migration, the social life of insects, insect-human interactions, and insects in winter.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE CLASS

This introductory session will provide an overview of the upcoming changes in the NJ storm water rule, why it matters and the requirements for green infrastructure. Design, installation, and maintenance of these structures will also be discussed. An optional tour of storm water facilities including a green roof, rain gardens, and porous paving will be provided at the end of the event.

The Watershed Institute will hold a two-day course with a certification in February, 2020.

BUTTERFLY HOUSE TOURS

Enjoy guided tours of the butterfly house to view and learn about local butterfly species. If the weather cooperates, we may try catching wild butterflies in the fields. Tours will continue weekly through the summer. Feel free to bring your camera or phone to take pictures.

FAIRY FESTIVAL

Come celebrate fairies and all things fairies at our annual festival. We will fete the rainbow fairies, woodland fairies, forest elves, gnomes and more. SECRET LIVES OF BATS

EXPLORING THE NIGHT

Join this illuminating exploration of nature at night on the Mountain Lakes Preserve. Throughout the year, nighttime offers unique and revealing insights into the local ecology.

On this spring evening we may discover the songs of courting frogs, talk to owls, listen for foxes and look for lingering glowworms. Co-sponsored by Friends of Princeton Open Space, this fun-filled hike will be lead by naturalist and Watershed Education Director, Jeff Hoagland. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp.

Note: This program does not meet at the Watershed Reserve.

CLIMATE SUMMIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Watershed is proud to host and participate with Princeton Day School in this climate change and sustainability summit created by high school students for high school students.

The day includes the World Climate simulation game, outdoor experiential ecology activities, a keynote speaker from Terracycle, student speakers, and a non-profit fair. Engage with students from other schools and share sustainability action plans. Optional tour of the Center precedes the conference at 10 a.m.

Lunch included at no cost. Free round-trip bus from Trenton.

WATERSHED TRAIL RUN & FESTIVAL

This family event includes a 5K & 10K, all-trail experience designed to tour the 950-acre Watershed Reserve with views of meadow and forest, including Wargo Pond and Honey Brook Organic Farm. Trails are evenly graded with occasional roots, rocks, and mud hazards. All fitness levels are encouraged to participate. Pre-registered childcare is available during the race time.

Explore the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail (LHT) by bike as part of the River Days celebration sponsored by the William Penn Foundation and LHT. Learn all about where your drinking water comes from, discover the local circuit trail network, and enjoy a picnic lunch with Watershed Institute naturalists on this beginner ~15 mile trek.
Start the morning with refreshments at the Watershed Center before biking into Lawrenceville (and back). Take advantage of the new water permeable connector trail from the Watershed Center to the LHT junction on Wargo Road!

The trip will highlight the dividing line between the Delaware River and the Millstone River watersheds. A picnic lunch will also be provided.

Participants must provide their own bikes and obey NJ helmet laws. The LHT route for this tour includes several road crossings and short hill climbs. All fitness levels are welcomed to participate.

Upcoming Butterfly Festival at The Watershed Institute - Aug. 4

18th ANNUAL BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL

The Butterfly Festival is the Watershed’s largest annual educational event. The day focuses on the importance of maintaining the delicate balance between humans and the natural world. This family-oriented day has grown to be a major regional event, attracting more than 3,000 visitors.

The Butterfly Festival welcomes visitors every summer to tour the Kate Gorrie Butterfly house, explore the insect zoo and meet butterfly stilt walkers. The festival also features the Kwel’ Hoy totem pole and exhibit, on display by the Natural History Museum and the House of Tears Carvers. The traveling display draws a line against fossil fuel development at the Watershed with the help of indigenous nations, local activists, and citizen scientists.

Explore the creatures and critters, attend an author’s book reading or participate in a local water tasting contest inside The Watershed Center.

We’ll feature rides on an electric train, the Watershed Express, which will travel to the back field for lawn games and solar-powered music. There will also be a butterfly and bug parade, hay rides, nature walks, crafts, playing with giant bubble and balls, and hula hooping with glitterhoops.

There will be food trucks, vendors with environmental and outdoor equipment, and live music with the Ballycastle Band and Cosmic Jerry.
