Sundays@7: THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT

The Chatham Community Players

Sundays @ 7 present
THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT
via ZOOM

One Night ONLY – Sunday, February 28th, at 7:00 PM

The Chatham Community Players is excited to present virtually staged reading of THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT by Jeremy Kareken & David Marrella and Gordon Farrel as a part of their successful Sundays @ 7 play reading series. One Night ONLY – Sunday, February 28th at 7:00 PM. Gus Ibranyi directs.

Jim Fingal is a fresh-out-of-Harvard fact checker for a prominent but sinking New York magazine. John D’Agata is a talented writer with a transcendent essay about the suicide of a teenage boy—an essay that could save the magazine from collapse. When Jim is assigned to fact check D’Agata’s essay, the two come head to head in a comedic yet gripping battle over facts versus truth.

…terrifically funny dialogue…once the writer and the fact-checker get into a lively debate on the ethics of factual truth vs. the beauty of literary dishonesty, it’s time to really sit up and listen…Their deadly serious but oh-so-funny ethical dispute is brilliantly argued…the debate at the heart of this play transcends comedy and demands serious attention.” —Variety.

“…buoyantly literate…wholly resonant questions [are] wrestled with in this briskly entertaining play…you’ll find yourself happy to have your preconceptions disturbed and assumptions unsettled.” —Washington Post.

THE CAST:

  • Bobby Ellis as Jim
  • Leslie Williams as Emily
  • Charles Greyson as John
Producer is Steffi Denmark

This performance will be streamed via Zoom. Suggested donation is $5 per viewer.

Jersey City New Play Festival Closes JCTC Spring Season

Jersey City New Play Festival

WHERE:
Merseles Studios, 339 Newark Avenue, Jersey City
TICKETS:
$10
To purchase tickets visit: www.JCTCenter.org

Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) concludes its Spring 2019 Season with the Jersey City New Play Festival.

Back-to-back evenings of cutting-edge theatre by emerging playwrights, the Jersey City New Play Festival opens with a staged reading of a new play about the life and times of Shirley Chisholm, the first black congresswoman and the first black woman to run for president. On May 31, a trio of short plays exploring a range of themes –Lost Property, Stateroom, and An Encounter – will be presented.

May 30

Unbossed & Unbowed – Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress.  In 1972, she ran for the Presidential nomination of the Democratic party. Written by Ingrid Griffith and directed by Ana Margineanu.

May 31

  • Lost PropertyLove, loss, houses, land and how little we understand each other. Written by Megan Furniss and directed by Jacquelyn Claire de Villiers.
  • Stateroom In spite of his addiction, Renee’s lover holds the reins in their relationship. When he takes her on a cruise to Mexico, she is forced to question whether her subjugation is worth fighting for. Written by Karin Diann Williams and directed by John Pietrowski.
  • An Encounter – A devoutly religious woman has an encounter that tests the foundations of her faith. A play about the mystery of evil and the limits of forgiveness. Written by Michael McGoldrick and directed by John Pietrowski.

JCTC is committed to exposing audiences to fresh voices in theatre and the arts. The plays in the festival were selected from dozens of submissions and will be featured in a staged reading format using professional actors and directors, followed by a talk-back with the audience.

“With the four plays we’re presenting as part of the Jersey City New Play Festival in May, we are concentrating on writers from diverse backgrounds and continuing to expand our circle of new voices,” said Olga Levina, Artistic Director, JCTC. “Theater is ever-changing and we want the writers, actors and directors together with the audience to be part of that change.”

Staged readings of new plays not only enable audiences to discover new writers, but invites the community to collaborate in the theatre development process. Play readings have been integral components of JCTC programming. This year is the 3rd Annual Jersey City New Play Festival. In March –Woman’s History Month – JCTC presents readings of plays focused on Feminist issues, in Partnership with The Writers Theatre of NJ.

Given the success of that program, JCTC extended the festival into May with a new selection of plays, expanding the festival’s parameters to include short works and Unbossed & Unbowed – a one-woman play. Written and performed by Ingrid Griffith, the first act was presented by JCTC in October. The Jersey City New Play Festival will be the debut performance of the complete, two-act version of Unbossed & Unbowed.

The two May days of the Jersey City New Play Festival were curated by Catalina Florina Florescu, a professor of theater and comparative literature at Pace University and Steven Vessella, Theater Manager, JCTC.

“The plays selected for the festival bring a fresh look into current issues,” said Florescu, who is also the New Play Development Curator for JCTC. “Via stage readings and an audience Q & A, each playwright gets the chance to receive feedback from the audience to further develop the impact of their work.

The Company @ Bloomfield College Presents a Staged Reading of ANOWA

ANOWA

WHEN: Thursday, April 4, and Friday, April 5. Both readings will begin at 7:00 p.m.
WHERE
: Center for Creativity+Technology at Bloomfield College, 467 Franklin St., Bloomfield
ADMISSION: Suggested donation $15. No charge for Bloomfield College students.

ANOWA, a provocative drama by acclaimed Ghanian playwright Ama Ata Aidoo, examines the tensions emanating from gender, race, and class inequalities in Victorian era Ghana.

Amy Estes, a co-founder of Marvell Repertory Theatre (2011–2014), a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway company in New York, will direct the staged reading.

"I loved the idea of exposing Bloomfield College students and the Bloomfield community to this play by Ama Ata Aidoo, the first woman to have a play published in Africa,” said Estes. “Anowa is an intelligent, ambitious, principled young woman who is trapped and ultimately ruined by cultural expectations that she cannot support. It struck me that even in today's America, when women and people of color challenge historically dominant cultural narratives, they face judgment and danger.”

“That makes Anowa's tale of life along the Gold Coast in the 1870s especially worthy of attention right now," Estes continued. "The staged reading format, in which actors and audience focus on the language of the script rather than a play's design elements, allows The Company to give voice to a great play without the expense of a fully-staged production."

The Company @ Bloomfield College's staged reading of ANOWA, under the artistic direction of professor Dr. Fiona (Freddie) Harris, features Bloomfield College students Elizabeth Agyapong, Joseph Darby, Naja Long, Joshua McLean, Precious Olubiyi, Delores Oppong Ntow, and T'shaka Thorpe, and staff member and alumna Celeste Walden-Kelley. Bloomfield College students Tenasha Simpson and Destin Johnson serve as stage manager and dramaturg.
