About

Ruth Ross
West Orange, NJ

A retired high school English teacher (Chatham High School), I have reviewed New Jersey theater (professional and community) for local newspapers and my blog since 1996! You may have read my reviews in Recorder Newspapers' Out & About or in Worrall Newspapers Essex County arts section.

I am a firm believer that one does not have to go to New York City and spend a fortune for tickets to a show (not to mention tolls and parking). There is a wealth of culture close to home in northern and central New Jersey!

NJ Arts Maven will inform you of events I believe are worth your time. Look for my reviews and decide if you want to attend a show. And if I don't review the particular performance/activity, I will post announcements and press releases and direct you to the appropriate website.

I am the mother of two daughters and the grandmother of four. I am always on the lookout for activities for families and children, along with theater for audiences of all ages.

I'd love to hear from you! If you have event or program suggestions, please let me know so I can investigate and write a notice or a review for the blog. If you have an appropriate photo, please attach it as a jpg file so I can include it in the post. I can be reached via e-mail at:

By the way, a "maven" is an "expert" in Yiddish—used to affectionately describe a "know it all"—but the word has become part of American English!
