3 UPCOMING PROGRAMS @ THE WHIPPANY JCC SPONSORED BY THE HOLOCAUST COUNCIL OF GREATER METROWEST NJ

Yesterday, September 1,  was the anniversary of Germany’s invasion of Poland, the beginning of WWII and the Holocaust, the war within the war- against the Jews and other “undesirables.”

After staging Polish attacks on German forces to create the appearance of Polish aggression, Germany invaded Poland, beginning WWII. Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later, and all the members of the Commonwealth of Nations, with the exception of Ireland, rapidly followed suit. The German blitzkrieg crushed the Polish defenses. Within a month all of Poland was occupied by German forces as well as the Soviet  forces with whom Germany had just signed a non-aggression pact.

Please join us for our programs which resume next Thursday with a Lunch ‘n Learn, featuring Joan Arnay Halperin, the author of My Sister’s Eyes, which describes her family’s journey from hell to freedom, helped by Portuguese Consul Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a "dry" spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney's plan, which he devises with his wife's help, is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.

Presented by special arrangement from Music Theatre International, Inc.

The cast of Deathtrap features: Scott Nagle of West Nyack NY, Nick Wolf of Bloomfield NJ, Bridget Burke-Weiss of Boonton NJ, Larry Wilbur of Ramsey NJ, and Kristin-Leigh Nicholson of Hillburn NY.

Haunted by the sight of hundreds of Jewish refugees outside the consulate gates, the Japanese diplomat Chiune “Sempo” Sugihara and his wife, stationed in Kaunas, Lithuania at the beginning of World War II, must decide how much they are willing to risk. Inspired by a true story, Visas and Virtue explores the moral and professional dilemmas that the Consul General faces in making a life or death decision: defy his own government’s direct orders and risk his career, by issuing live-saving transit visas, or obey orders and turn his back on humanity.

This Academy Award winning 26-minute portrait, gracefully captured in period black and white by noted cinematographer Hiro Narita, poignantly pays tribute to the rescuer of 6,000 Jews from the Holocaust.

Chris Tashima is a Los Angeles-based actor and filmmaker. He co-wrote and directed Visas and Virtue, for which he received the Live Action Short Film Academy Award, in 1998. He also portrays the Humanitarian diplomat, Sugihara, onscreen. Tashima also directed, co-wrote, and starred in the award-winning short film, Day of Independence, which depicts the life of Japanese Americans imprisoned in internment camps during World War II. He has appeared in numerous independent feature films, most recently Under the Blood Red Sun, a screen adaptation of the award-winning young adult novel by Graham Salisbury.
