Children's librarian Megan Pehanick recommends a back to school story that's not so normal to go along with the not so normal start to the current school year. After 25 years Louis Sachar has written the 4th installment in his comical Wayside School series entitled Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom. Join the students and staff of Wayside School once again for wacky adventures and over the top antics in their school building that was supposed to be built one story high with 30 classrooms but wound up being built 30 stories high with one classroom on each floor. This book is sure to keep your kid laughing (recommended for ages 8-12 years). Request this title here.

Collection Development Librarian Jon Michaud recommends Intimations by Zadie Smith. This slim collection of short essays was written in the early weeks of the COVID-19 lockdown. Elegant and introspective, they examine the ways small and large that the pandemic altered Smith's life. Most engaging are Smith's sketches of people she encounters on the street, in the library, or in ATM vestibules. I read one essay every morning before leaving the house and it was a great way to start the day. Proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Equal Justice Initiative and the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund for New York. Place a request for Intimations here.

Sarah Pardi, the library’s Head of Public Service, recommends two stories of survival: I usually prefer to read non-fiction and when summer arrives, I am always drawn to tales that involve adventure, nature, and survival. Two titles I highly recommend are Into the Wild by John Krakauer and Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea by Steven Callahan. Each title tells a captivating and harrowing tale of men facing an epic battle against mother nature with two very different results. Both are page turners that will keep you glued to the end. The library's head of public service, Sarah Pardi, recommends The Overstory by Richard Powers: If you are like me, you have a favorite type of tree. Or perhaps you think there is nothing better than the smell of pines in the forest. Which is why I borrowed The Overstory by Richard Powers when I saw it available on Libby. Powers does a beautiful job of describing the modest tree's importance in our ever evolving world. But this is not just a story about trees. It is the story of humans and their connection to the natural world--a relationship that is quite complicated, at times moving and ultimately concerning. Access this title here.

Circulation assistant Cathy Pepin-Toussaint recommends The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. This is a thrilling tale of two sisters living in occupied France during World War II. Vianne and Isabelle are very different in personality and temperament, but they both find the courage to join the Resistance and fight the Nazis invading their country. If you love historical fiction, you will not be able to put this book down.

A thoughtful and touching story.

I opened the book and at the end of the first page I was hooked until I finished all 600 pages.
