THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER—Streaming Holiday Dance Spectacle

THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER

Recorded Live at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a holiday mash-up for the entire family.

Directed and choreographed by Olivier nominated Jennifer Weber, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a contemporary dance spectacle set to Tchaikovskyʼs timeless music. A unique and joyful event, this evening-length production is performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hopʼs founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set.

Just like the original, in The Hip Hop Nutcracker, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmannʼs beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City.

Through this re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker take us on a journey that celebrates love, community and the magic of the holiday season.

Produced by NJPAC and Eva Price. Directed and Choreographed by Jennifer Weber

Each participant must buy a ticket to attend the event, and we'll send you a link to register to participate in the games. Only 18 people can participate in each interactive session, so it's great for family gatherings, ladies night get-together's or corporate team building.

Ticket buyers must have access to a computer or laptop that can download Zoom (the video-conferencing program) in order to attend the event. Tablets/phones are not formatted correctly and make the experience less interactive for players.

HIP-HOP COMES TO ASBURY PARK NEXT FRIDAY!

GARDEN STATE HIP-HOP CELEBRATES

HIP-HOP AT THE JERSEY SHORE
WITH NEW JERSEY LIVE VOL. 3 THE CYPHER

WHEN: FEBRUARY 22. Doors 9 PM. Show 10 PM. Ages 21+
WHERE:
HOUSE OF INDEPENDENTS, 3 COOKMAN AVE., ASBURY PARK
TICKETS: $20
Tickets can be purchased here.

Asbury Park is known for its Rock n Roll roots, but hip-hop has asserted itself into the cities growing music scene.

New Jersey Live is a hip-hop event created to showcase the best emerging hip-hop artists throughout New Jersey. Garden State Hip-Hop intends to commemorate the genres resurgence into the Asbury Park music scene with a live edition of their popular Garden State Hip-Hop Cypher series.

The show will feature leading rap artists apart of the Asbury Park hip-hop community. Rodney Coursey, founder of Garden State Hip-Hop and New Jersey Live 3 producer says, “This is a great opportunity for individuals apart of the growing arts and entertainment scene in Asbury Park to see how special our hip-hop movement is.” This years show will be hosted by What’s The Movement's RAMSEYSAIDWHAT and include 14 rap artists in a one night lyrical showdown. Among the names scheduled to participate are Solo For Dolo, founder of the Asbury Park Hip-Hop Fest and Poca, a female rapper from Asbury Park that established her name after releasing her EP Apocalypto in 2017.

Coursey was listed among others as someone leading the charge in a new generation of New Jersey hip-hop by the Star Ledger in 2012. New Jersey Live Vol. 3 also includes a special performance by Black Suburbia Music, a rap and alternative collective known for their fiery live concerts at The Saint, Asbury Park Music Foundation, and The Stone Pony. “Drew can sing like an angel and spit hellfire with his rhymes, too. His Black Suburbia Music Group encompasses all kinds of music genres, from hip-hop to heavy metal,” writes the Asbury Park Press.

After decades of musical segregation in Asbury Park, venue owners have slowly began opening their doors to local and national rap artists like Jay Critch, Lupe Fiasco and Cupcakke. Budget Travel Magazine dubbed Asbury Park “The Coolest Small Town In America” in 2017 and New Jersey Live Vol. 3 will help Asbury Park sustain that image.

Coursey adds,New Jersey Live 3 will be a special night for all of us. The entire Asbury Park hip-hop community will be under one roof celebrating our progress. I can’t wait!”

The Get Up Kids are an American indie rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-90's emo scene, otherwise known as the "second wave" of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records. While the imprint was started to release albums by The Get Up Kids, it served as a launching pad for several side-projects such as The New Amsterdams and Reggie and the Full Effect. The Get Up Kids were viewed throughout their existence as a prototypical emo band, having been major players in the Midwest emo movement of the mid-1990s. After briefly breaking up, the band announced a 2009 reunion tour to support the tenth anniversary re-release of their classic album, Something to Write Home About. Earlier this year, the band signed to the Polyvinyl Recoreds label.

Hamilton Leithauser
with Caveman

WHEN: Saturday, July 14, Doors 7:30pm / Show 8:30pm
TICKETS: $25

I Had A Dream That You Were Mine is an album of songs Hamilton Leithauser (former lead vocalist for The Walkmen) and Vampire Weekend multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij wrote and recorded together between July 2014 and February 2016 (under the name Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam). In the spirit of collaborative albums, not unlike those of David Byrne and Brian Eno, each musician's individuality remains in tact, while in fact, on this record, both Hamilton's identity as a singer and Rostam's as a producer seem to reach new heights. "This was a record I'd been wanting to make for at least a decade," Rostam says. "As a fan of Hamilton's voice in the Walkmen, I'd been wanting to capture it in ways it hadn't been captured before -- to make songs with him that placed the crooner right beside the howler, the screamer beside the whisperer -- to try to leave no stone unturned in terms of how we should approach the delivery of a song. And also to try to push his voice outside of any musical context it had lived in before." Says Leithauser, "Rostam's one-man-band process is so fundamentally different from the way I've always written songs, and it's very impressive. We had no idea what kind of music we were going to make—we actually didn't know we were working on an album at first—but unexpected things kept falling into place. We were writing and recording everything simultaneously—it was flat-out inspiring just to be there." Many of these songs seem to take place in a memory of New York's past, or wading through the waist high waters in a half-submerged New York of the future.

The Hold Steady: Stay Positive 10th Anniversary Show

WHEN: Wednesday, July 25, Doors 7:30pm / Show 8:30pm
TICKETS:
SOLD OUT

Formed in 2003, The Hold Steady have released six albums, numerous singles and played over 1000 shows during the past 15 years. The Brooklyn-based band has performed in all 50 states in the USA, nearly every province in Canada and throughout Europe and Australia. In November 2017, The Hold Steady released their first new music in over three years when they put out the songs "Entitlement Crew" and "Snake In The Shower" ahead of their (now) annual week-after-Thanksgiving four night stand at the Brooklyn Bowl. In March 2018, ahead of a sold out weekend at The Electric Ballroom in London, the band released two more new songs, "Eureka" and "Esther." 2018 will see The Hold Steady re-issue a 10th Anniversary Edition of their fourth studio album, Stay Positive, featuring b-sides and previously unreleased outtakes. The band will play a series of special weekend shows beginning in July called "Constructive Summer."

OSHUN

WHEN: Thursday, July 26, Doors 8pm / Show 9pm
TICKETS: $15 GA / $30 Reserved Balcony

Since the release of their debut mixtape ASASE YAA in 2015, OSHUN has amassed quite a following. They've been recognized by media heavy hitters such as Rolling Stone, The FADER, Viceland, Huffington Post, NPR, Essence, and Vogue, to name a few. They've also performed throughout the US and Brazil all while remaining full-time college students at NYU. It's been a wonderful journey and now that these young goddesses have graduated college, they are transitioning into the next phase of manifesting their purpose. OSHUN is preparing for the release of their debut album series, bittersweet, complete with captivating visuals, a two-month long tour of the US & Canada, and a deeper look into their ever-evolving selves.

Jenny Lewish with Cut Worms

WHEN: Friday, July 27, Doors 8pm / Show 9pm
TICKETS:
SOLD OUT

One of the most celebrated and respected performers of her generation, Jenny Lewis got her start as the dynamic frontwoman of influential LA group Rilo Kiley in 1998. She has since released three albums under her name, most recently 2014's The Voyager. In addition to her solo work, she was a member of The Postal Service, part of the duo, Jenny and Johnny, as well as the lead vocalist for Nice As Fuck. Lewis has collaborated with Beck, Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams and M. Ward, among others. She has also written music for films such as the musical/drama, Song One, starring Anne Hathaway, and Very Good Girls starring Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen.

JD McPherson with Secret Country

WHEN: Saturday, July 28, Doors 7:30pm / Show 8:30pm
TICKETS: $25

When JD McPherson talks about his latest album, Undivided Heart & Soul, there's no glimmer of self-adulation, or even the confidence one might expect of a veteran artist. Instead, there's a snapshot of McPherson's creative process bringing the record to life, a journey filled with fear and change, then boldness, and, eventually, catharsis. The best rock music has a story to tell. This record chronicles a series of upheavals, frustrations, roadblocks, and kismet-a cross-country move, failed creative relationships, a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity, and learning to love making music again by letting go. Along with collaborations with fellow Oklahoman Parker Millsap, Butch Walker, and Aaron Lee Tasjan, McPherson's selections for Undivided Heart & Soul include many deeply personal themes: "Let's Get Out of Here While We're Young" shares writing credits with longtime bandmate Ray Jacildo and McPherson's wife, Mandy. He also delved into character profiles, both fictional and based on real-life experiences, stories McPherson has held onto but never thought of as fodder for songwriting, such as the Las Vegas bus station interlude detailed in "Style (Is a Losing Game)." Undivided Heart & Soul is a statement record, one that asserts McPherson as he is now, battle-weary but stronger than ever. Secret Country was born out of love for outlaw country tunes, cold beers, eating hot dogs, and just about everything else you might relax with in the summertime. Originally coming together as an acoustic duo performing at local parties, bbq's, and bars, the advent of original material led to an augmentation of the group into the sextet that you hear tantalizing your eardrums today.

NJPAC ANNOUNCES SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG ARTISTS SEEKING THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES

Summer Programs at NJPAC

Middle school and high school students in search of their inner artist don’t have to look any further than NJPAC when their classes adjourn. Creative minds are at work to make 2016’s Summer Programs at NJPAC an unforgettable experience for young people involved in the performing arts.

Many of the country’s most recognized performers in their fields are back to lead these popular, immersive sessions in acting, dance, jazz, hip-hop, musical theater, dance and comedy. Seasoned pros of Chicago’s famed Second City will return to coach students in improv comedy, while building teamwork skills in the process. Jazz piano great Geri Allen will again head a faculty of ace musicians for the All-Female Jazz Residency, this year at Rutgers University in Newark in partnership with its Institute of Jazz Studies.

Participants often describe their experiences in terms of having fun, while receiving a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study with the masters.

“While learning the ins and outs of their chosen pursuit, our teens use the arts to express their creativity and their most authentic voice,” says Alison Scott-Williams, Vice President of Arts Education at NJPAC. “Through this exploration, they make new friends, inspire others to share their art, and have a great time.”

MUSIC @ MAY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER THIS WEEKEND

New Jersey Jazz Society presents

Michael Hashim_pressThe Billy Strayhorn Orchestra under the direction of Michael Hashim

WHEN: Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 2:30 PM
WHERE: Mayo Performing Arts Center, 100 South St., Morristown
TICKETS:
$20-$25
box office (973) 539-8008
online: www.mayoarts.org

Born in 1915, Billy Strayhorn became an arranger for the renowned Duke  Ellington Orchestra at the age of 24. He shared composing, arranging, directing and piano duties with the master himself until his untimely death in 1967. Strayhorn produced prodigious amounts of music for Ellington and many others, including Johnny Hodges, Lena Horne, and The Copasetics. Like Ellington, Strayhorn had a wide-ranging and forward-looking musical mind. Having helped bring big band jazz to its fullest flowering with the Ellington orchestra, and having also been in tune with the first wave of modern jazz or bebop, Strayhorn is often cited as a formative influence by jazz composers and arrangers who came afterward. Strayhorn's artistic collaboration with Ellington was-like their friendship-very close, so close in artistic terms that in some cases it has been hard to tell who actually wrote what.

Alto saxophonist Michael Hashim (above) has frequently performed and recorded music associated with Duke Ellington and, particularly, Billy Strayhorn. He won a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1989 in support of "Lotus Blossom," a CD devoted to Strayhorn's music, and was nominated for British Jazz Album of the Year for a second Strayhorn album, 1999's "Multicolored Blue."

The Newark Academy Jazz Band will perform prior to the main concert.

Thirty years after setting the hip-hop world on fire, Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick the Ruler will reunite on Union County Performing Arts Center Mainstage for an evening of classic rap and hip-hop.

As "The Human Beat Box," Doug E. Fresh produced a literal symphony of sound with his mouth, a microphone and freestyle rap lyrics. Throughout the mid-‘80s, Doug, Slick Rick and the Get Fresh Crew churned out smash hits like The Show and La-Di-Da-Di, considered two of early hip-hop's classic songs. Doug's signature dance move—"The Dougie"—has made an indelible mark on pop culture, performed by scores of celebrities from First Lady Michelle Obama and Olympian Gabby Douglas to model Kate Upton and pundit Wolf Blitzer.

Slick Rick is a Grammy-nominated rapper known as "hip-hop's greatest storyteller." About.com ranked Slick Rick #12 on its list of the Top 50 MCs of our time, while The Source named him the #15 lyricist of all time.

The Get Fresh Reunion, presented by Prime Entertainment and UCPAC, will be hosted by Johnny Walker and also feature Lisay, E.M.S. (En Masse Sodality) and DJ Diamond.
