The Barn Theatre presents the North American community theatre premiere of The Revlon Girl. Set eight months following the Aberfan mining disaster in Wales (as featured in Netflix’s hit show The Crown) that killed over 100 children, The Revlon Girl tells the real-life story of a group of bereaved mothers who meet every week above a local hotel to talk, cry and even laugh without feeling guilty. The play imagines one meeting at which they invite a Revlon representative to give a presentation about make-up. From that innocent premise, the play delves into the tragic situation with both deep emotion and humor.  “IT’S NOT JUST LIPSTICK”—it’s unimaginable loss and the courage to carry on. This touching play gives voice to the community affected by the tragedy and tells a story of survival, resilience and grief.

While the play has been performed by several professional and amateur theatres in the U.K., this marks the North American community theatre premiere. Director Bill Purdy first saw the play performed in London in 2017. “I was absolutely blown away by The Revlon Girl, which takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions. After seeing the play, I started researching the 1966 Aberfan disaster and discovered a remarkable story of a community dealing with unimaginable tragedy. I found that most Americans, like myself, were previously unaware of this disaster. This play is a story about love and grief that speaks to our common humanity. The Revlon Girl received critical acclaim and awards in Wales, Edinburgh Fringe, and London. I am delighted to have our audiences be among the first in America to experience this singular theatrical event.”

Building off the play’s important themes of resilience in grief, the Barn Theatre has also launched an innovative arts partnership with Boonton High School—a district that has recently experienced loss—to exhibit student artwork in the lobby. The art will include abstracts, illustrations and personal expressions that will reflect the vision & talent of some of our local youth. This year students have exhibited their art at NJPAC, MPAC, the New Jersey State Capitol, CCM and Mount Olive High School’s National Honor Society Invitational. Several students have received awards and high honors.

The cast of The Revlon Girl features Messalina Morley of Ridgewood as Revlon, Ruth Morley of Ridgewood as Rona, Ali Archetti of East Hanover as Sian, Kathleen Mallon of Kinnelon as Jean, and Leslie Darcy of Oakland as Marilyn.

This fun little holiday show is a special event specifically for families and children.

Here’s a modern twist on Dickens’s classic...with a female lead! Eleanor Scrooge, a greedy old spinster, spends her days barking orders at her gift shop employees. Though the mall will be closed, she still wants them to work on Christmas Day! Then, she’s visited by the ghost of her old boss, Mr. Marley, and a parade of zany spirits who materialize from cheesy collectible figurines. First, there’s the Spirit of the Past, who loves the 1950s and takes Eleanor dancing at a bygone party. Then, there’s the Spirit of Present, who takes Eleanor to the Hatchett family Christmas dinner, where Eleanor feels like she’s watching a sitcom with a nice message of forgiveness. Finally, the Spirit of Future, who takes Eleanor to her own funeral, completes her change of heart.

The cast of A 21st Century features Jacky Vogt, Christine Morgan, Terri Shetler, Caroline Ritacco, Santina DiBenedetto, Zoe Davies, Claudine Boucher, Kyle Schickner, Pearl Hart, Brady Shetler, Alexia Davies, Jenna Levitt, Luna Mills, Leala Mills, Anthony DiBenedetto, Jordan Vogt, Leslie Silverman, Marisa Rossi, Alli Hartley-Kong, Michael Daly, Karen Lerner, Charles Grayson, Caroline Leonard, Vivian Lerner, Nola Lerner, and Bob Vogt.

Performance Dates: Friday, January 10-Saturday, February 1

The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by "Froggy" LeSueur, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time "Froggy" has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So "Froggy," before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister's pretty fiancĂ©e is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn't understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the "bad guys," and the "good guys" emerge triumphant.

Cast Requirements:

Charlie Baker - (30s-50s) Charlie is the "foreigner" of the play's title, an Englishman in his late- forties who comes to Georgia for a weekend visit with his friend, Staff Sergeant Froggy LeSueur. Initially, Charlie is extremely shy, dull, and morose as he worries about the apparently imminent death of his philandering wife. A proofreader for an English science fiction magazine, Charlie considers himself "boring" and wonders what it would be like to have a vibrant personality. At the beginning of the play, Charlie is so sad and shy that he doesn't want to speak to anyone. When Froggy introduces him as a "foreigner" who can't speak or understand English, however, Charlie gradually discovers his hidden potential. Overhearing the plot of the Reverend David and Owen Musser to buy Betty's lodge and turn it into a meeting place for the Ku Klux Klan, Charlie ultimately leads Betty, Catherine, and Ellard in a successful fight against these villains. In helping Betty thwart David and Owen's machinations, Charlie discovers leadership skills, love, and the vibrant personality he has always craved.

Reverend David Marshall Lee - (30s-50s) The Reverend David Marshall Lee is the fiance of Catherine and one of the main villains, along with Owen, in the play. Pretending to be concerned about Betty and her struggling business, David secretly attempts to gain control of her lodge so he can turn it into the Tilghman County headquarters for the Ku Klux Klan. David appears to be friendly, sincere, genuinely decent, kind, and patient, and he is quite canny in carrying out his devious plot. In Act II, however, Charlie's clever taunts subtly reveal David's basic meanness.

Staff Sergeant Froggy Lesueur - (30s-50s) Froggy is the ebullient demolition expert from the British Army who brings his friend, Charlie Baker, to Georgia for a three-day weekend. In his annual visits to the United States, Froggy has become good friends with Betty Meeks and is genuinely concerned about her welfare. When Charlie pleads for solitude during his brief stay, Froggy is caught between his loyalties to both Betty and Charlie; he hatches the plan to pass Charlie off as a "foreigner." Froggy's plan is for Betty to be charmed by the exotic visitor while Charlie gets his needed peace and quiet. In his late- forties, Froggy speaks in a Cockney dialect, is dressed in his army fatigues, and is extremely cheerful.

Betty Meeks - (50s or older) A widow, Betty Meeks is the owner and operator of the fishing lodge and resort in which the play takes place. Betty has always dreamed of traveling outside of Georgia and is quite thrilled with the prospect of having a "real, live foreigner" as her guest. Since the death of her husband, Betty has been struggling to keep her resort business alive, unaware of David and Owen's underhanded plot to gain control of it. Betty speaks with a strong Georgia accent. She talks to Charlie, "the foreigner," as if he were deaf, as if speaking louder and slower will facilitate Charlie's understanding.

Owen Musser - (30s-60s) The racist Owen Musser is a local Georgia man who serves as the henchman for the main villain, the Reverend David Lee. After being named the property inspector for Tilghman County, Georgia, Owen has the authority to condemn Betty's fishing lodge as structurally unsafe, which would force Betty to sell and enable David Lee to purchase the lodge with the money he gains from marrying Catherine. To call Owen "crude" is to indulge in understatement: he is mean-spirited, ignorant, volatile, and extremely prejudiced against anyone who doesn't fit his ideal of "Christian, white America.

Catherine Simms - (20s-40s) Catherine is staying with Betty at the lodge. She is engaged to the Reverend David Lee, unaware of his true, villainous character. A former debutante and the heiress of a huge fortune, Catherine is bored with life, restless, and unsure of what she wants. When she discovers in Charlie a man who is genuinely kind and really enjoys listening, she believes she has found her ideal romantic mate. Catherine is small in stature and pretty.

Ellard Simms - (Teens-early 30s) Ellard is Catherine's younger brother and an extremely insecure young man who is considered by others to be mentally defective. Shue describes him as "a lumpy, overgrown, backward youth, who spends much of his time kneading something tiny and invisible in front of his chest." Catherine has promised to give Ellard half of their very large inheritance if he shows any signs of mental and social competence. The villainous Reverend David Lee conspires to make Ellard appear stupid in order to maintain control over all of Catherine's money, but during the course of the play Ellard proves to have both moderate intelligence and considerable courage.

GUEST Review: Three Cheers for “1776” at the Barn Theatre in Montville

Reviewed by Rick Busciglio May 19, 2019

A longtime resident of Parsippany, Sherman Edwards, was a composer, lyricist, musician, and schoolteacher. As a composer he wrote the scores for several Elvis Presley movies. as a composer and musician he worked with such bandleaders as Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Louis Armstrong. Today, Edwards, who died at only 61 in 1981, is best remembered for the one musical for which he wrote both the music and lyrics, 1776.”The playwright was Peter Stone. 1776 opened on Broadway in 1969 winning the Tony for “Best Musical.” The film version was released in 1972.

Now, just a few miles from where his former North Beverwyck Road home was located, 1776 is being impressively staged at the Barn Theatre in Montville. This is a robust, slightly bawdy, highly entertaining production that might more accurately been titled “The Birth of a Nation.” The plot, of course, centers on John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress seated in Philadelphia to vote for independence from Great Britain and sign the Declaration of Independence thus establishing the new nation, “The United States of America.”

Director Roseann Ruggiero has assembled an outstanding cast of 24 men and two women, led by Joe Elefante with a star turn as John Adams. Michael Foley is superb as Benjamin Franklin. He nicely displays his dual passion for liberty and female companionship (randy…a better word?), Jeffrey Dopson has fun as the spirited Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, Brian Eller is excellent as John Dickinson, the strong advocate for loyalty to the British Empire and the preservation of slavery in the southern colonies, Brad Bebout is fine as the great Boston patriot and president of the Congress, John Hancock. The two fine voiced ladies are Adelaide Prekopa as Martha Jefferson and D’Angelique Dopson as Abigail Adams.

If you have never seen a version of the play, we should note that it is not a Disney sanitized portrayal of the Founding Fathers. These are not “sanctimonious orators prone to dramatic proclamations of the glories of democracy.” You will be surprised by the humor, mild profanity and outright bawdiness in some of the scenes. For instance, Thomas Jefferson tells John Adams and Benjamin Franklin that he has writer's block and can't come up with anything for the Declaration of Independence because he "burns" for his wife, whom he has not seen in six months. Adams expresses similar yearnings, and Franklin then makes a joke about how at his age it's best to stick to writing because "the pen is mightier than the sword." New Jersey is prominent, particularly when a letter to the Continental Congress from George Washington reports on the general drunkenness of militia in New Jersey, and how their demand for prostitutes is greater than the supply of prostitutes in New Jersey, and that many have contracted venereal disease.
The play contains 13 musical numbers, with “Sit Down, John” (Adams and Congress); “Till Then” (Adams and Abigail); “But, Mr. Adams” (Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Sherman and Livingston) and “Is Anybody There?” (Adams and Thomson)  particular standouts.

The balance of the cast of 1776 features: the imposing Tim Daniels as Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Barca as George Read, Roy Bogert as Andrew McNair, Jim Coakley as Col. Thomas McKean, Michael Daly as Leather Apron, Don Flynn as Dr. Lyman Hall, Michael Foster as Lewis Morris, Ronan Green as The Courier, Jim Hammill as Stephen Hopkins, Cory Herbert as Robert Livingston, Clinton L. Scott as James Wilson, Adam Mahonchak as Dr. Josiah Bartlett, Dave McDonald as Caesar Rodney, Donald Pauselius as Joseph Hewes, Lawrence Sanders as Rev. John Witherspoon of New Jersey, Robert Scarpone as Samuel Chase, Gabe Weiss as Edward Rutledge, Larry Wilbur as Rodger Sherman and Jared Zak as Charles Thompson.

Director Roseann Ruggiero’s support team includes; Music Director Tracy Lee Witko, Producer Geraldine Baillod and Carla Kendall, Stage Manager  Susan Hagen, Set Design Greg Moran, Set Decor Anette Angelini and Camille DiLorenzo, Scenic Artist Anette Angelini, Lighting Design Cheryl Wilbur ,Sound Design Larry Wilbur,

Props Camille DiLorenzo, Costumes Janice Schopper, Make-Up / Hair Pearl Hart,
Wig Consultant Natacha Moreno and Make-Up / Hair Christine Morgan

The principal take-away from this rousing depiction of the decision to revolt is that nothing has changed....even then our leaders were all too human. They were just as divided, just as prone to good and evil, just as irrational of temper as the politicians of today.Three cheers for cast and crew.

The remaining performances are on May, 25, 31 June 1, 7, & 8 at 8pm and May, 26 & June 2 at 2 pm. Tickets are $25 (senior/student tickets are $23 on matinees only).

The Senior Performing Ensemble (34 young performers from Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic and Middlesex counties, ages 11-18) of Aspire Performing Arts Company is taking it back to the 1920’s jazz era with its upcoming production of the Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie was the 2002 season's most awarded new show on Broadway. Set in the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when "moderns"—including a young flapper named Millie Dillmount—were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, and rewriting the rules of love. This high-spirited musical romp is a delightful valentine to the long-standing spirit of New York City and the people who seek to discover themselves there.

Aspire PAC’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie is directed by Aspire PAC Artistic Director Lisa Beth Vettoso and features musical direction by Charles Linnell and choreography by Jaimie Michelle Bass. Cheryl Wilbur serves as Production Manager and Robert Scharf is the Stage Manager.

Aspire Performing Arts Company was formed in January 2011 by Lisa Beth Vettoso and represents the culmination of her 20+ years of experience in the performing arts. Aspire’s mission is to provide educational workshops and production opportunities for children and teens, offering a professional arts experience in a friendly atmosphere.
