New Jersey Fiction Writing Contest Winner Announced

Three young writers from New Jersey have been selected as winners of this year's Jersey Shorts competition, a state-wide prose writing contest for high school students. This is the first annual Jersey Shorts contest; Jersey Shorts is run by Writer's Theatre of NJ, a professional equity theater located in Madison, NJ. All New Jersey students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate in the state-wide prose writing contest. Students were asked to submit two works, a 1500-word prose fiction story and a 750-word piece of “Flash Fiction” based on a prompt.

Three New Jersey students were selected as winners, and all winners received a Governor's Award on May 22, 2018.

The three winners for the 2018 competition are:

  • Emily Mayo, a senior at Bergen County Academies
  • Samantha Parelli, a freshman at Newark Academy
  • Owen Walor, a sophomore at Holmdel High School

“This is the first year of the contest,” said John Pietrowski, Artistic Director of Writers Theatre of New Jersey. “We didn’t know what to expect in terms of the quality of submissions. We were very impressed by the skill and sophistication of the writing.”
Writer's Theatre would like to thank all of the writers who participated and welcome all eligible students to submit to next year's contest. Information on submitting to next year’s contest can be found on the Writer's Theatre website here.

NEW DATES FOR “NEW PLAYS NEW JERSEY”

Writers Theatre of New Jersey Logo

Nothing Can Keep New Plays New Jersey Down!

We said we'd keep you in the loop as to when our rescheduled New Plays New Jersey performances would be and we've got the dates for you! Two of the readings will take place at The Bickford Theatre in Morristown, as originally planned, but two others are going to be held at Short Stories Bookshop and Community Hub, right here in Madison. We're really happy to be back at The Bickford, which has been home to the series for the past few years, but we're equally as excited to bring some of the readings to Short Stories, which has hosted some of our classes and to our Banned Together Cabaret earlier this year.

Without further ado, here are the new dates for New Plays New Jersey:

At the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum
6 Normandy Heights Rd, Morristown, NJ:

Sunday, March 18th at 7 PM - "Psychodrama" by Phoebe Farber
Friday, March 30th at 7 PM - "La Fonda" by Suzanne Trauth

At Short Stories Bookshop and Community Hub
23 Main Street, Madison, NJ:

Sunday, March 25th at 7 PM - "Nichiiwad" by Hal Corley
Saturday, March 31st at 7 PM - "Turning"  by Darrah Cloud

Parking: The Bickford parking lot is the Morris Museum's parking lot, on the side of the building. Short Stories has parking behind the building - you'll want to use the driveway entrance on Green Village Road, which will be on your left just before the railroad overpass.

Thank you all for being so patient and understanding as the storm forced us to have to cancel and reschedule and we hope to see you on these new dates for the readings!

We also wanted to remind you that both our NJ Women Playwrights Project readings celebrating Women's History Month and our Mile Square Playground readings are still happening this month, in Jersey City and Hoboken respectively.  The schedule for those is as follows:

At the Jersey City Theatre Center
339 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ:

Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 PM  - "Wish Bone" by Phoebe Farber
Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 PM  - "Pushing the River" by Rosemary McLaughlin

At Mile Square Theatre
1400 Clinton St, Hoboken, NJ:

Tuesday, March 20  at 7:30 PM  - "The Forest" by Lia Romeo
Tuesday, March 27  at 7:30 PM  - "The Other White Meat" by Erin Mallon

As always, all our readings are free of charge, with a $10 recommended donation (or donate what you can) and you can use any leftover punches on your WTNJ reading passes. If you're interested in purchasing a 7-Play Pass, you can still get those on our website, here. And all of our reading series this month are a part of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance's annual Stages Festival, a statewide celebration of theatre that brings free and low-cost performances to NJ audiences. For more information on the Stages Festival, click here.

Thank you and we hope to see you soon!

A New Year Brings New Plays to Madison’s Writers Theatre of NJ

Writers Theatre of New Jersey Logo

SOUNDINGS

WHEN: kicking off on January 2 and running through January 15, 7 PM
WHERE:
Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Dreyfuss Theatre, 285 Madison Avenue, Madison
ADMISSION:
readings are free with a recommended donation of $10 (or pay what you can), but you can get a seven-play pass for a donation of $25; a fourteen-play pass for $35; or a Big Read Pass, which gives you entrance to all Soundings Readings as well as our March series at The Bickford Theatre, Jersey City Theatre Center, and Mile Square Theatre.
For more information on this year’s Soundings series, the playwrights, the individual plays, or to reserve your seat, please click here.

Soundings brings you fourteen plays in fourteen days. Featuring new works from some of the country’s best playwrights—this year’s crop includes two Pulitzer Prize nominees, Kilroy and Emmy Award winners, and more—and they’re performed by professional actors under the direction of professional playwright— a great way to see some of the best new theatre without paying a lot of money.

Each reading will be followed by a brief post-show discussion with the playwright and the director, where the audience will be invited to give feedback on the play. This part of the process is important, as this feedback often helps to shape the play as it moves forward to future productions; it’s a chance for you to be an important part of the creative process.

Staged readings, like those in the Soundings series, allow playwrights to hear their work read aloud by professional actors and to see the reaction of audiences to their play; the performances and reaction help the playwright determine what changes, if any, are needed to further develop the script. For audiences, this is a way to become part of the creative process and to help shape brand new plays. It’s also an inexpensive way to see a lot of great, professional theatre close to home.

This year’s plays are:

  • Tuesday, January 2 – “The Patriot” by Joe Sutton
  • Wednesday, January 3 – “Like Saltwater” by Pia Wilson
  • Thursday, January 4 – “Nichiiwad” by Hal Corley
  • Friday, January 5 – “Hurricane Colleen” by Tammy Ryan
  • Saturday, January 6 – “And Their Sons, Too...” by Seth Rozin
  • Sunday, January 7 – “Encounters” by Yasmine Rana
  • Monday, January 8 – “Memoirs of a Forgotten Man” by D.W. Gregory
  • Tuesday, January 9 – “Teach” by Donna Hoke
  • Wednesday, January 10 –  “Wolf at the Door” by Richard Dresser
  • Thursday, January 11 – “Redux” by Rob Zellers
  • Friday, January 12 – “Ghost Story” by Lia Romeo
  • Saturday, January 13 – “The Excavation of Mary Anning” by Ian August
  • Sunday, January 14 – “The Real Story” by Robert Clyman
  • Monday, January 15 – “Branwell (and the other Brontës): an autobiography edited by Charlotte Brontë” by Stephen Kaplan

Dates and plays are subject to change, please consult the website for any last minute changes.

Tino is a 12-year old boy in one of Newark’s public schools. Picked on by fellow students for his studiousness and love of reading the Bible, and harassed by his aunt, who became his guardian after the violent death of his mother, he befriends Bernadette, the school lunch lady who doesn’t like kids. When Bernadette’s life is threatened, Tino teams up with Deja, a young girl in his school, to lend a hand. This unlikely trio shows us how empathy and love can make a difference in the face of impossible odds.

We are so proud to open the 2017 Writers Theatre season with the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of Surely Goodness and Mercy, a beautiful play by Ms. Chisa Hutchinson that serves to remind us of the better angels who walk among us and dwell within us, no matter how trying times get or what we face.

The play is set in Newark, which prompted our Artistic Director, John Pietrowski, to produce the piece there, honoring Chisa’s vision, as the landmarks, sights, and people of Newark she saw growing up as a Newark native are at the heart of the play.  Additionally, the play is co-produced with Yendor Productions, a Newark-based nonprofit arts organization. Yendor’s Artistic Director, Rodney Gilbert, is directing the play.

Please join us for this heartwarming story of friendship and love.

We commissioned the piece as part of the NJPAC Stage Exchange, a program of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center - John Schreiber, President & CEO, and Writers Theatre of New Jersey, in partnership with the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.  This production and educational outreach were made possible by a generous gift from the Kenneth Goldman Donor Fund.  Learn More

Madison Young Playwrights Program Returns

In a few weeks, we will resume our Madison Young Playwrights Program. Professional theatre artists will work with Madison students, teaching them the basics of dramatic writing and helping them write their own plays. All completed work will be entered in our annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Festival. Programs take place in all three elementary schools, the Madison Junior School and St. Vincent Martyr School.

Staged readings of representative plays will be performed by professional actors at each school so that playwrights can share their work with their family and peers. This is the 31st year of the program, and it holds a very special place in our hearts. We’re looking forward to another year of working with these imaginative students!

Participants must be enrolled in the schools listed above. You can register your child online on our Madison Young Playwrights Page: www.wtnj.org/madison-young-playwrights-program/

NJ Writers Project

The New Jersey Writers Project offers poetry, prose and playwriting residencies in schools led by teaching artists who are working professionals in their field. A Language-in-Motion residency provides professional actors to present staged readings of work developed in the residencies. This powerful, engaging program gets students excited about writing and performing and provides a valuable experience for all involved.

In the words of one teacher, “Leeds Avenue School had an EXCITING, ENGAGING, & ENCOURAGING residency. Our new assistant-principal, Mrs. Irwin, observed Lamont [the resident teaching artist] in action.  Not only was she impressed but she asked me about professional development with Lamont for all ELA Teachers. The strategies and techniques Lamont uses are very engaging, hands-on, and spark student interest and participation.” - Tamar LaSure-Owens

Don’t pass up an opportunity to give your students the educational and artistic spark they need! For more information, please visit https://www.wtnj.org/nj-writers-project/

NJ Youth Poet Laureate

NJ Poetry Out Loud

Writers Theatre partners with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts every year to offer Poetry Out Loud to students throughout the state. Poetry Out Loud, the national high school poetry recitation contest, is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. It is the country’s largest poetry recitation competition, where students learn about classic and contemporary poems through memorization and performance. The program helps students sharpen their skills in public speaking and performance, while teaching them to read critically and to deliver the message behind the words. Last year nearly 30,000 students participated in the Poetry Out Loud program and it was exciting to see the 2016 state winner, Celeste Sena, reach the National Poetry Out Loud Semi-Finals in Washington, D.C!

NJ Young Playwrights Festival

The 2016 NJ Young Playwrights Festival was a huge success! The NJ Young Playwrights Festival is the third oldest playwriting festival in the country. Each year, hundreds of young playwrights throughout the state enter for the chance to have their plays performed by professional actors, and amongst other prizes, a free membership to the Dramatists Guild.

This past year, we were very grateful to the Mayo Performing Arts Center for allowing us to utilize their beautiful Starlight Room for the festival! We had so much fun watching the winning plays be performed, and the turnout was excellent. You can see photos from the festival at
https://www.wtnj.org/nj-young-playwrights-contest/.

The deadline to enter this year’s New Jersey Young Playwrights Festival is January 5, 2017, so we encourage students everywhere to start writing, as we already have a number of submissions in from young playwrights!

For more information, including how to submit your play to the festival, please visit our NJYPF page: www.wtnj.org/nj-young-playwrights-contest/

CAA Summer Camp

Our Creative Acts Academy Summer Camp was a hit this year! Students took part in a wide variety of fun and engaging classes across a span of theatrical subject areas. From acting to playwriting to musical performance to improvisation, there is a class to suit every young artist at CAA.

This summer, improvisation students learned the foundations of dramatic technique and presented what they learned to their parents in the form of improv games and exercises. In playwriting classes, students crafted plays complete with well-developed plots and witty humor in just one to two weeks. We were proud to see our students flourish in all areas of the arts and hope they will continue to pursue their interests in our new year-round classes!

What keeps you up at night? Writers Theatre of New Jersey and the Madison Recreation Department, as part of the Rose City Initiative, will explore that question as the Summer Youth Theatre performs Jonathan Dorf and Alison Wood’s musical, 4 A.M.  Alison Wood, who wrote the music and lyrics, was born and raised in New Jersey.  The NJ Premiere will be presented by Madison area performers ages 14 -22.

The show features characters who find themselves wide awake at 4 A.M., as they struggle with loneliness, love, and the frustrations of life as a teenager.  They each think they’re the only ones who can’t sleep, but the show lets us know that we all struggle sometimes.  As director Danielle Constance said, “Everyone, no matter how cool, put together, happy, or confident they appear, feels alone sometimes.  Everyone, no matter how old or young, feels unimportant or insignificant at some point.”  While highlighting these trials and tribulations, this musicalalso points towards the joys of life discoveries and finding ones place in the community.

In addition to working with theatre professional Danielle Constance, and Madison musician Brian Lang, the Summer Youth Theatre students will also be working with Guggenheim award-winning choreographer and performance artist, Claire Porter.  Ms. Porter has traveled all over the world performing her Portables, hilarious spoken word pieces mixed with dance that tell incredible stories and have won her international acclaim.  Writers Theatre believes that pairing young artists with more experienced ones allows the students to learn from the established artists and come to understand that their own work is no less important or valuable than that of the professionals they’re working with.

Recommended for ages 13 and up.
