“And then, I was just gone.
Anything he thought of a mother, I shattered. They know that I’m at
the end of my sentence. So, I do hope I can put their world right
side up. But… I can’t take what they’ve been through away.”

The United States is awakening to
the crisis of mass incarceration and the “war on drugs,” but the
devastating effects these forces have had on women are still
underreported. Since the 1980s, the number of women in prison has
grown by a staggering 800%. Most Americans don’t know that women
are now the fastest-growing segment of the prison population, and
80 percent of women entering the system are mothers.

APART tells the stories of women and
their loved ones whose lives have been upended by the criminal
justice system. Amanda, Tomika, and Lydia, the mothers featured,
are but three of the growing number of women incarcerated in U.S.
prisons.
This screening will be followed by
a live talkback with Malika Kidd, Program Director, Workforce
Development, Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (featured in Apart). Moderated by Helen Archontou of the YWCA of Northern New
Jersey
APART is part of the TIFF/PBS/Indie
Lens Pop-Up/Puffin Foundation Winter-Spring 2022 documentary
series. Sponsored locally by the YWCA of Northern New
Jersey, Sen. Loretta Weinberg and the League of Women Voters
