Israel's Moment: Support and Opposition to Establishing the Jewish State, 1945-1949

The Ruth and Alvin Rockoff Annual Lecture

Award-winning historian Jeffrey Herf sheds new light on how a Jewish state came to be forged in the shadow of World War II and the Holocaust and the onset of the Cold War.

Professor Herf's forthcoming book exposes the political realities that underpinned international support and opposition to Zionist aspirations in Palestine in the 1940s. Drawing on archival documents and the public record, he offers an unprecedented account of this contested past and the role of the United States, the Arab States, the Palestine Arabs, the Zionists, and key European governments.

Jeffrey Herf, Distinguished University Professor, Department of History, University of Maryland, College Park

Thanks to a generous endowed gift, The Ruth and Alvin Rockoff Annual Lecture has enabled the Bildner Center to present thought-provoking talks

each year since 1999. From the inaugural talk, “Democratization and its Opponents in Contemporary Israel," to today, we are grateful for the support of the Rockoff family.
