Collection Development Librarian Jon Michaud recommends Intimations by Zadie Smith. This slim collection of short essays was written in the early weeks of the COVID-19 lockdown. Elegant and introspective, they examine the ways small and large that the pandemic altered Smith's life. Most engaging are Smith's sketches of people she encounters on the street, in the library, or in ATM vestibules. I read one essay every morning before leaving the house and it was a great way to start the day. Proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Equal Justice Initiative and the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund for New York. Place a request for Intimations here.
