Broadway is shut down through 2020. Most regional theaters aren’t even thinking about starting their seasons until mid-2021. It’s going to be a while before we can gather in theaters again. What’s a playwright to do in the meantime? One answer: write for Zoom.
It’s not the same as live theater, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be an effective art form in its own right! Many theatre companies are looking for plays that they can produce online right now. In this workshop, we’ll discuss the limitations of Zoom and how to work around them, as well as the advantages. We’ll brainstorm scenarios, do writing exercises, and share some of our work, and participants will leave with lots of ideas and the start of at least one Zoom play.  Lia Romeo is a playwright, literary manager, and teaching artist. Her plays have been produced at 59E59, Unicorn Theatre, Project Y Theatre Company, New Jersey Repertory Theatre, Dreamcatcher Rep, HotCity Theatre, and many other companies, and have received workshops and residencies from the O'Neill National Playwrights Confernece, the Lark, the National New Play Network’s MFA Playwrights Workshop, and elsewhere. Since the pandemic shut down theaters, she's written two plays for Zoom and adapted another; her short plays "Lifestyle Content" and "Last Call" have been produced by nine different theater companies, included in the "Scene Study Emergency Pack" for remote acting instruction, and translated into Italian, and her full-length play "Sitting and Talking" has two productions scheduled for later this summer. She is the literary manager and associate artistic director at Project Y Theatre Company, and she teaches for the New Jersey Play Lab and the MA program in creative writing at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
