Two River Announces Activities & Resources for Autism Acceptance Month

According to Autism™ New Jersey, New Jersey has the highest rate of autism in the nation: 1 in 32 children. Like many, art is being used as an outlet for self-expression. Art and theater arts prove to be extremely impactful in improving fine motor skills, cognitions, visual and spatial discrepancies.

To honor Autism Acceptance Month, Two River Theater is announcing its lineup of live events, resources and activities scheduled for the month of April.

During regular season programming, Two River Theater offers Relaxed Performances that are designed to provide a welcoming and judgement-free theater experience where usual theater etiquette ‘rules’ do not apply. For those that have difficulty sitting still in a theater seat, like to verbally respond during a performance or have sensitivity issues or special needs, these performances are the perfect fit. Small adjustments are made to lighting and sound and a designated quiet activity and relaxation area is provided within the theater. Two River also offers theater classes to organizations who serve people on the autism spectrum and/or with special needs through the Spectrum Theater Residency program. Since all activity so far this season has moved to a virtual platform, the theater is offering free online resources and activities including weekly theater exercises, a live Facebook story time, and a joyful resource round table for family, friends and students.

We miss sharing space with our students and patrons on the autism spectrum,” says Director of Education Kate Cordaro, “so these theater exercises and events are a way to connect with our imaginations, emotions, and each other. We hope to share some moments of joy and inspiration throughout the month.”

LIVE EVENTS

STORY TIME LIVE WITH AMANDA: BENJI, THE BAD DAY, AND ME

APRIL 21 | 11AM | FACEBOOK LIVE | FREE

Join teaching artist and actor Amanda Butterbaugh as she shares Sally J. Pla’s tender story about siblings. Nothing seems to be going right for Sammy and when he gets home from school, he finds his autistic little brother Benji is having a bad day too. On days like this, Benji has a special play-box where he goes to feel cozy and safe. Sammy doesn’t have a special place, and he’s convinced no one cares how he feels or even notices him. But somebody is noticing, and may just have an idea on how to help Sammy feel better.

Recommended for ages 5-8.

THE JOY OF THE ARTS IN THE AUTISM COMMUNITY

APRIL 27 | 7PM | ZOOM |FREE

There are a multitude of ways to connect the arts to individuals on the Autism spectrum, and many exciting regional companies and artists creating this work. A chance to gather and share joy and resources, this roundtable brings together artists, parents, educators, and more for a discussion (and celebration!) of the exciting work underway. They will also explore how theater, dance, fine art, and other art forms can be especially meaningful for individuals on the spectrum as well as their loved ones.

Featured in this roundtable are Education and Community Engagement Manager Amanda Espinoza, parent and founder of The Calm Within the Chaos Jane Kleiman, and Bluelaces Theater Company Co-Artistic Director Devin Fletcher. This discussion is open to parents, teachers, artists, and more. Participants will be encouraged to share what art has brought them joy, and what they’ve found to be particularly engaging in their families or classrooms.

Arts Council of Princeton and Eden Autism Partner to Increase Arts Accessibility

The Arts Council of Princeton (ACP) and Eden Autism are proud to announce a new joint program that brings hands-on art to adults with autism. The 12-week trial, which ran over the spring and summer of 2019, has been extended and will now meet weekly at the Art Council’s Paul Robeson Center the Arts in downtown Princeton. Approximately eight of Eden’s participants will take part in the program.

“Our mission of ‘Building Community through the Arts’ is strengthened with each new partnership,” noted ACP Interim Executive Director Jim Levine. “This partnership extends the joys of creativity and self-expression to adults who may not otherwise have this opportunity at home.”

Professional instructors lead participants through weekly hands-on classes.  Participants are joined by their support staff, who assist the teaching artist on staff.

“We're very fortunate to have forged a meaningful relationship with the Arts Council of Princeton. Our partnership not only allows our participants to learn new skills, but it shows the community how much individuals with autism can accomplish when they are given the support and opportunities to succeed,” says Michael Decker, President and CEO of Eden Autism Services. “The Arts Council’s staff are caring, professional instructors with a keen sense of the needs and abilities our participants bring to the class.”

“What I find most impressive about this program is that people with a disability who might not otherwise get the opportunity, are learning from professional teaching artists,” noted the mother of a one of the participants. “It’s so impressive what my son has achieved. He’s worked in painting, pottery, textiles, and really enjoys the chance to create.”

The new program, which began on September 9, is open to Eden’s participants.  Volunteers are always welcome. For more information, please visitartscouncilofprinceton.org or call 609.924.8777.

The Arts Council of Princeton, founded in 1967, is a non-profit organization with a mission of Building Community through the Arts. Housed in the landmark Paul Robeson Center for the Arts, designed by architect Michael Graves, the ACP fulfills its mission by presenting a wide range of programs including exhibitions, performances, free community cultural events, and studio-based classes and workshops in a wide range of media. Arts Council of Princeton programs are designed to be high-quality, engaging, affordable and accessible for the diverse population of the greater Princeton region.

Eden School Child Art Exhibition in D&R Greenway's Olivia Rainbow Gallery through May 31

D&R Greenway’s Olivia Rainbow Gallery presents

For more information about Eden Autism Services visit www.edenautism.org or call 609.987.0099

Wild Night features a perky mural fairly leaping from the walls (above). Autism students of all ages crafted this evocative, three-dimensional evocation of nocturnal creatures, out and about under the moon. Eyes of intent owls echo a rising moon; bats, fireflies and saucy skunks seek midnight nutrients.

Each year, Eden students create inventive, intensely hued nature art for the Olivia Rainbow Gallery. The exhibition, a work-in-progress, began during April, to celebrate Autism Awareness Month.

Eden staff is known for guiding and inspiring multi-level success with their participants. When the mural was completed, staff brought their young artists to hang it. Eden students particularly respond to bright colors, evoking young Olivia Kuenne, in whose memory this gallery was founded and is maintained.  Her passion for nature and her own art skills live anew on this gallery’s walls through these young artists’ creativity.

Laura Pollack, Communications Coordinator of the Eden School, reminds that “Eden Autism is a recognized leader in improving the lives of children and adults with autism spectrum disorder.”  Founded in 1975, Eden was “among the first providers to address the need of services across the lifespan – from the point of diagnosis through adulthood. Eden provides expertise in working with … the most challenging and complex behaviors.”  Rather than grades, Eden’s students of many ages belong to Classrooms, as in “Early”, “Middle”, “Early Childhood Classroom, and so forth. Eden’s mission is “to improve the lives of people with autism, - one individual at a time, one family at a time, one community at a time.”  www.edenautism.org  609 987 0099.

“We are delighted to partner once again with The Eden School,” asserts D&R Greenway Land Trust President & CEO Linda Mead. “Both our organizations are vital to the health and well-being of people in central New Jersey and beyond. Eden is nationally recognized as an ever-expanding leader improving the lives of both children and adults with autism.  Eden provides everything from early intervention to consultation, and useful seminars with world-renowned experts on the subject of this specialty.  Meanwhile, D&R Greenway makes sure our communities have clean drinking water and natural where children and adults can experience the outdoors, achieving healthier lives. So many studies show how important walking in natural surroundings is for human development and the brain.”

EVERYTHING IS FINE UNTIL ITS NOT.jpg

Vanguard Theater Company today announced a live performance of Montclair native Doreen Oliver’s powerful one-woman show. This performance, directed by Janeece Freeman-Clark, explores Oliver’s personal experience as a parent grappling with an autism diagnosis for her young son.

The play will be followed by the short film COLOR MY MIND, which examines the impact of a childhood autism diagnosis on African-American parents.

“We are thrilled to partner with Montclair Film, pairing an award-winning play with a groundbreaking short film, to shine a light on how autism affects families across communities,” said Vanguard Theater Managing Director Jessica Sporn.

Says Oliver: I was born in Newark but am proud to be bred in Montclair! I'm an alum of Nishuane, Hillside (where I discovered my profound love of the performing arts), Glenfield and Montclair Kimberly Academy. My parents, Jeanette and Harvey Oliver, still live in town and my youngest son takes classes at Sharron Miller's Academy of the Performing Arts.  I'm looking forward to doing this show at "home."

CRITICAL ACCLAIM:

Time Out New York, 4-star review: "A fresh and eye-opening look at what it’s like to raise an autistic child…Oliver paints a painful yet beautiful picture of the challenges that she and her son face daily….She radiates bravery and compassion, both as a performer and as a mother. I would happily have stayed beyond the one-hour running time just to hear her sing  the rest of "The Rainbow Connection:—one of many songs in her maternal repertoire— and learn more about how she and her inexplicably special Xavier experience the world.”  (Full review attached)

NBCNews.com: “Fearless...Oliver takes the audience through a myriad of emotions and at times you completely forget that there is only one woman on that stage.”

Theatre Is Easy (Best of Fringe 2016): “Riveting....While one might expect a story about motherhood and the challenges of autism to be overly sentimental and preachy, this production is rather an honest, heartfelt tale about family, love, and motherhood that anyone might relate to.”

The New York Amsterdam News: “Oliver singlehandedly brings to life nail-biting dramatic and tense domestic moments.... The show tells a touching story with humor, at times bursting with the hard-hitting nature of reality.”

PAPER MILL PRESENTS AUTISM-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE OF “MARY POPPINS” FRIDAY, JUNE 23, AT 1:30PM

AUTISM-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE OF MARY POPPINS

WHEN: FRIDAY, JUNE 23, AT 1:30PM
WHERE:
Paper Mill Playhouse, 22 Brookside Drive, Millburn
For tickets to this special performance, please call the Paper Mill Playhouse box office at 973-376-4343 or visit www.PaperMill.org/autism.

Paper Mill Playhouse, recipient of the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award, is pleased to announce a special Autism-Friendly performance of its hit musical Mary Poppins.

This performance is designed specifically for children on the autism spectrum or with other developmental disabilities, and is planned in cooperation with Paper Mill Playhouse’s Autism Advisory Team. The theater environment will be altered for this performance, providing a sensory-friendly, comfortable and judgment-free space that is welcoming to all families. The performance itself will be adjusted with special attention paid to lighting and sound.

Additionally, Paper Mill Playhouse will host a free open house titled Meet Your Seat on Thursday, June 22 from 3:00 to 5:00pm.  This is an opportunity for children who are new to the theatrical experience to visit the theater space before the show. Often children with autism or other developmental disabilities become anxious in new surroundings, new experiences, and they need time to transition. The Meet Your Seat open house provides an opportunity for children to come to the theater in advance of the performance and take time to feel comfortable in this new space.

Paper Mill Playhouse embraces a long history of providing access services to patrons of the theater. This is the fourth time Paper Mill Playhouse has expanded its autism-friendly performances to a mainstage production after successful performances of Elf, A Christmas Story and Disney’s The Little Mermaid. In addition to autism-friendly performances, Paper Mill Playhouse offers a wide variety of access programs and services including: sign-interpreted performances, open-captioned performances, audio-described performances, pre-show sensory seminars and barrier-free access theater-wide.

Major funding for autism-friendly programs is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support provided by C.R. Bard Foundation, The Karma Foundation, MetLife Foundation, Nordstrom, PSEG Foundation, and Summit Area Public Foundation. For more information on Paper Mill Playhouse’s programs for people with autism and other developmental disabilities visit www.PaperMill.org/autism.

PAPER MILL PLAYHOUSE, a not-for-profit arts organization under the direction of Mark S. Hoebee (Producing Artistic Director) and Todd Schmidt (Managing Director) and recipient of the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award, is one of the country's leading regional theaters.  Paper Mill Playhouse programs are made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Paper Mill Playhouse is a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Council of Stock Theatres, and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.
