William Rosenwald and Ruth Israels Rosenwald Course in Contemporary History

Gather a few details about your grandparents or great-grandparents, consider your favorite family mysteries and ramp up your determination! That’s all it takes to start uncovering your family history. In this course, you’ll learn the building blocks of Jewish genealogy research, including essential online and offline resources, effective techniques for finding information about your ancestors’ lives and the historical and cultural context necessary to interpret what you find.

Topics will include family trees, online search strategies, ship manifests, Holocaust victims and survivors, DNA, finding your ancestral towns, name changes and much more. Through weekly research assignments, you’ll practice what you learn in class while digging deeper into your family’s past. By the end of the course, you’ll have a portfolio of new documents and information ready to share.
