This Spring’s musical event is the 2005 Broadway and Off-Broadway hit, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE! This charming musical comedy tells the tale of six middle school “misfits” in Putnam County, NY finding themselves through one of the most competitive and brave journeys adolescents can embark on – a Spelling Bee! With a book by Rachel Sheinkin, music & lyrics by William Finn, conceived by Rebecca Feldman, and helmed by returning director Colin Hanlon, this Tony Award-winning timeless and hilarious story about self-discovery proves that W-I-N-N-I-N-G (and losing) isn’t everything.

THOSE WINDING PATHS

Anne Meara brought me her latest play to direct, Down The Garden Paths, a thoughtful comedy based on alternate realities around a family. And it ended up being quite a family affair.

Jerry Stiller, her husband appeared in a series of videos to bridge the scenes as an eccentric professor of metaphysics. Their daughter Amy acted in the show. And then the Wallachs , Eli and Ann Jackson and their daughter Roberta starred. The play went on to The Long Wharf Theatre, as well as Florida’s Parker Playhouse and finally an off-Broadway Minetta Lane production.

This is a good example of the many winding paths a show can take in its life of development. Explore all the paths.

One of my many favorite memories of Eli was when during the course of the 90-minute show without an intermission, some audience members, (especially in Florida) got up to go to the restroom.

Finally, Eli blurted out “why can’t they wait to go?” When I explained several were quite old, he responded “I’m onstage the whole time and I’m 87!!! How old ARE they???!!!”

This show was also the birth of a new career for our dear friend Board member Sharon Karmazin. She invested in this show’s move to New York and since then has become a major investor and producer of many, many shows and is the proud recipient of several Tony Awards as a result. And for me: the sister I never had.
