The Herb + Milly
Iris Gallery presents
SLADE: A Family Affair
Opening Reception: JAN 26 at 5PM-8PM
Join us for
the opening reception for SLADE: A Family Affair, the latest
exhibit in The Herb + Milly Iris Gallery!
In
celebration of Black History Month, this exhibition portrays the
influence that Black music, particularly Jazz, has had on the
father-and-daughter artist duo: Kelvin and Corrine Slade.
Kelvin, who takes photographs of Jazz performers, has an underlying
love for the musical genre. Corrine taps into her admiration
for Jazz when creating comforting abstract environments in her oil
paintings.
This
reception is free and open to the public. We hope to see you
there!

Rich Spector,
Special Events and Rentals Manager
In the early
70’s, we didn’t have playlists or music libraries on our phones. We
had cassettes and albums and 8-tracks. But more important than the
medium, we had the music.
Personally,
I had Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Carol King, Cat Stevens,
Gordon Lightfoot, and the one and only Jim Croce.
With his
memorable storytelling lyrics and gentle guitar riffs, Jim Croce made
me brave when dealing with bullies because he taught me “you don’t
mess around with Slim”. He taught me about longing for lost love when
you just want to make a phone call at the corner booth and that damn
operator is just not being all that helpful. He made us all want to capture time in a bottle, and I certainly wanted to let
everyone know that I had a name. Every ballad told us all how much he
loved us in a song.
In this
thrilling tribute to his father, A.J.
Croce captures the iconic troubadour’s inner voice, actual
sound, deep emotion and even his appearance to a certain degree
(Jim’s draping mustache and curly brown hair were both a goal for me
at a very young age). I never got a chance to see Jim in concert
other than on The Helen Reddy Show and The Midnight Special, so, I am
amazingly grateful for this opportunity to see A.J. honor his father
on the SOPAC stage on Friday, March 3 at 8PM.

Cabaret in the
Loft
Mark Evans
Hide & Seek
SUN, JAN 29 at 7PM
Growing up, Mark Evans was gay, chubby and certainly not interested
in the same hobbies as the ‘normal’ boys. He ensured people saw him
as “The Performer.” This brought comfort, safety and…a bucket load of
trauma to sing and laugh about later. Hide & Seek, a solo cabaret
by the Broadway and West End performer, is a hilarious and touching
show dedicated to anyone who seeks to bring their true selves to the
surface.
