Historian Lynne Swarts, University of Sydney, explores the female imagery of Ephraim Moses Lilien, the first major Zionist artist, who helped establish the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. One of the most important Jewish artists at the turn of the twentieth century, he had a remarkably nuanced vision of the New Jewish Woman, a portrayal that often eluded the Zionist imagination.
