VIRTUAL TALK: The Female Imagery of Zionist Artist Ephraim Moses Lilien
December 5, 7:30 p.m.
From Femme Fatale to the New Jewish Woman:
Gender, Nationalism, and Orientalism in the Art
of E. M. Lilien
The Ruth and Alvin Rockoff Annual Lecture
Historian Lynne Swarts,
University of Sydney, explores the female imagery of Ephraim Moses
Lilien, the first major Zionist artist, who helped establish the
Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. One of the most important Jewish
artists at the turn of the twentieth century, he had a remarkably
nuanced vision of the New Jewish Woman, a portrayal that often
eluded the Zionist imagination.
