This Week: PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT: TOTALLY TREES December 1 - December 31 Don't be fooled by winter! There are lots of trees with winter beauty. Use the clues and find them all in this family friendly and fun photo scavenger hunt. Check it out! Cost: $10 per family or group of 6. Preregistration is required.   CLOSE TO EXTINCTION! ENDANGERED IN NJ December 1 Which animals are endangered in our state? What does that even mean? Find out which species are in trouble, why, and how you can help! At the end, you will be able to meet our state endangered corn snake named Sniffles! Learn more! Cost: $7 per child. Preregistration is required.   LITTLE FARM FRIENDS: WINTER WALK December 2 and 16 Take a stroll on the wintery farm. See what changed throughout the seasons and make a craft to take home. Join us! Preregistration is required.   KIDS IN THE WILD: SHELTER BUILDING December 3 In this series, kids get into the woods, learning different outdoor skills, meeting other like-minded kids and building confidence. Preregistration is required.   PLANT OF THE MONTH: EVERGREENS December 5 This month Plant of the Month Club will meet in person just for the holidays. Learn about all kinds of evergreens from the Frelinghuysen Arboretum's gardens. Kids will use them to make a kissing ball -- but no kissing allowed! Check it out! Cost: $10 per child. Preregistration required.   HOMESCHOOL DAYS STAYING WARM – December 6 at Pyramid Mountain and December 13 at Great Swamp It's cold out there! How do the animals handle it? There are many different strategies, and we will explore them all. We will even try to insulate tiny "frogs" and see if we can keep them warm in the dens we build. HOLIDAY HISTORY – December 8 How was Christmas celebrated in the past? Tour The Willows mansion decorated for different decades of Christmas and learn all about it! Learn more here. Cost: $10-15 per person. Preregistration is required.   HOOTIN’ OWLS December 6 at Great Swamp and December 13 at Pyramid Mountain Our nighttime feathery friends come out at dusk to hunt. We'll learn about their unique adaptations and how they spend the winter as we take a walk on the trails to observe their forest habitat. We will also dissect a real owl pellet! Learn more. Cost: $12 per person. Preregistration is required.   WHAT’S IN BLOOM TOUR December 7 Explore The Frelinghuysen Arboretum with Thyra Kelly, Horticultural Program Specialist on this guided tour of the gardens and grounds. Spotlight On: WILLOWS WONDERLAND December 3 and 4 Celebrate the holiday season at Fosterfields! Tour The Willows mansion decorated for different decades of Christmas, talk to costumed interpreters and watch live cooking demos at both the mansion and the 1915 farmhouse. Take a wagon ride and meet the animals in the barnyard. Take your picture with Santa! Click here for more info. Cost: $10 per person, children 2 & under are FREE. Walk-in welcome! FESTIVAL OF TREES Fridays and Saturdays, December 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 and Tuesday December 27 - December 31 The most wonderful time of the year is almost here! Tour the Frelinghuysen Arboretum's Mansion decorated for the holidays in this first annual Festival of Trees. Preregistration is required.   HOOT, HOOT, HOORAY FOR LITTLES December 11 Enjoy a fun owl-themed story and a walk on the trails to hunt for some of our owl neighbors. Preregistration required.   COURSES IN NATURE: SURVIVING THE WINTER December 11 In this series, nature-minded adults can take a deep dive into various natural history topics each month with an expert naturalist. In this session, join us for an indoor presentation followed by a walk through the Great Swamp to learn about how New Jersey's wildlife has adapted to surviving the winter in a multitude of different ways, sometimes in a drastic fashion!
