WHAT TO PREPARE

Auditions will be by cold reading only. No monologues will be seen at this audition.

Actors may audition for multiple roles.

CHARACTERS

Winston Smith - M - (20s-40s) - A outer member of the ruling Party, contemplative, intellectual, and fatalistic. Winston secretly hates the totalitarian control and enforced repression that are characteristic of the government. Smith harbors quieted revolutionary dreams.

Jules - F or M - (18-30) – Winston’s lover, a person of beauty working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. Jules is pragmatic and optimistic. Jules's rebellion against the Party is small and personal, in contrast to Winston’s ideological motivation.

Parsons - F (Early 40s-Early 50s) – An obnoxious and jovial Party member who lives near Winston and works at the Ministry of Truth. She has a group of suspicious, and an ill-mannered child who is a member of the Junior Spies.

Syme - F or M (30+) – An intelligent, timid, and self-effacing person who works with Winston at the Ministry of Truth. Syme specializes in language. Syme is working on a new edition of the Newspeak dictionary. Winston believes Syme is too intelligent to stay in the Party’s favor.

O'Brien - M or F (40+) – A mysterious, powerful, and sophisticated member of the Inner Party whom Winston believes is also a member of the Brotherhood, the legendary group of anti-Party rebels.

Gladys - F or M (8-11) – Parson's bratty child, a member of the Junior Spies.

Landlady - F (30+) – Unkempt and a bit rough around the edges, but friendly. Smarter than she seems.

Guards 1 & 2 - M or F (18+) – One of O'Brien's Guards. Stiff, militant, obedient.

Messenger - M or F (Late teens) - A robotic, obedient messenger for the Party in the office building where Winston works.

Coffee Vendor - M or F - M (Any Age) - A punctual, obedient servant for the Party in the office building where Winston works.

Loudspeaker Voice - M (Any Age, Voiceover) - The voice of the Party heard through the screens in all buildings in Oceania.

Big Brother's Voice - M (Any Age, Voiceover) - The Voice of the infamous Big Brother, who's pictures can be seen on all posters.

Goldstein's Voice - M or F (40+, Voiceover) - A leader of the Revolution determined to educate the public of Big Brother's danger.

Martin - M or F (Any age) - O'Brien's butler/maid.

Waitress - F (Any age) - A waitress.
