Love transcends the
harsh realities of war and prejudice in this
sweeping Pulitzer Prize-winning tale centered
around two unlikely love affairs. Set on a tropical
island during World War II, this timeless Rodgers
& Hammerstein classic features some of the most
beautiful music ever composed woven into an
inspiring story cherished the world over.
Now in 2022, Rodgers
& Hammerstein’s SOUTH
PACIFIC roars back onto the stages of
America and speaks directly to the realities of
this generation. Winner of ten Tony Awards, the
beloved score includes “Some Enchanted Evening,”
“I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,”
“There is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” and “You’ve Got To
Be Carefully Taught.” Rodgers
& Hammerstein’s SOUTH PACIFIC is
a unique contemporary theatrical experience about
all the dreamers among us who are searching for our
own Bali-ha’i.

This exciting mixed
bill will feature George Balanchine’s virtuosic
Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, which presents the
audience a display of ballet bravura and technique
and Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain pas de
deux, an intimate pas de deux balancing freedom and
beauty with the elegant simplicity of Arvo Pärt’s
Spiegel im Spiegel.
The Company will
also present Masquerade by Bettijane Sills. About
Happiness, choreographed by Jackson Ferreira, which
explores the search for the truest sense of fulfillment
between two souls who have formed a strong
connection and its many forms.
"I was lucky
enough to be in the studio with Christopher
Wheeldon when After the Rain was
created. My deep respect and admiration for
Chris extends beyond the workplace. His
passion and creativity are a true source of
inspiration for anyone who is fortunate enough to
work with him. This ballet was created on two
of New York City Ballet's most well known principal
dancers Wendy Whelan and Jock Soto. Because
of their unique partnership and artistry the ballet
became an immediate success and is now performed
world wide.
It was not until
many years later that I had the pleasure to perform
this heartfelt pas de deux. In its simplicity
it is a divine creation and a gift to dance this
exquisite work.
It has been truly a
gift to have the opportunity to set this glorious
work and pass on my experience and understanding to
these beautiful dancers at NJB. I find it has
been just as rewarding on the other side and truly
fulfilling to see their own interpretation and
growth as artists as they dive into this work."—Maria
Kowroski, Acting Artistic Director
