NEW PLAYS READING SERIES IN THE AFTERNOON: TWO JEWS
Inspired by a true story: In 1863, Abraham Lincoln sent
his closest Jewish friend, Issachar Zacharie, behind
Confederate lines to meet with Judah P. Benjamin, also
Jewish, Secretary of State for the Confederate States of
America, to explore the possibility of a peace treaty following
Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg. In the background of this
failed peace negotiation to end the Civil War, the two emissaries
from opposing sides negotiate over the fate of Philip Green, an
enslaved Black man working for Benjamin, and the secret of that
relationship is unraveled.
