Community Day: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration – Breaking Down Barriers

 Monday, January 18, 10am - 5pm 

Join us for our annual celebration honoring the life and legacy of one of this nation’s greatest heroes: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year we highlight how barriers were broken and continue to be broken with a woman of color and Asian descent soon to become vice president of the United States.

Winter Stargazing

 Tuesday, January 12, 8:30pm 

Journey with us to Steward Observatory’s Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter high in the Santa Catalina Mountains of Arizona. The dark night skies at this site offers superb stargazing. With the 32-inch diameter Schulman Telescope we will explore celestial objects visible in the winter sky – from the planet Mars and spectacular nebulae to star clusters and distant galaxies!

Studio Snapshot: Danielle Scott

“Studio Snapshot” is a new series of short videos exploring the work of Newark contemporary artists. In this second video, artist Danielle Scott discusses her background and how mentors within the Newark art scene helped develop her practice.

Danielle Scott’s work is featured in the Art + Tech: Perception | Access | Power virtual exhibition.

 

Escape from the Ballantine House

 Thursday, January 14, 7pm 

$3 - Members, Seniors, Students
$6 - Adults


Set in The Newark Museum of Art’s Victorian-era mansion, Escape from The Ballantine House challenges you and your friends to race the clock as you try to find the hidden Ballantine Beer recipe and escape the house before getting caught. This experience will be available on Zoom with a facilitator. Individuals will be grouped into break-out rooms of three to five people.

Virtual Creative Play: Interactive Storytelling

Join master storyteller Jonathan Kruk for an interactive, virtual family experience that will engage, entrance, and educate your little ones as they become a part of the art of storytelling.

Virtual Homeschool: Sculptures

Wednesday, January 20, 10am

$10 per student. Limited capacity.

Students are invited to participate in an arts workshop of their choice. All projects are inspired by art from The Newark Museum of Art’s collection and will be based on one of these themes: portraits, print at home, sculptures from recycled materials or stop-motion video. The theme of this session is sculpture. Materials list will be sent after the experience is booked.

Have you ever wanted to make a terrarium? Join Samantha of Fern & Fossil for an hour-long virtual terrarium building workshop! She will walk you through the process of designing and caring for your very own custom hanging terrarium.  Supplies are included and will be shipped to your address.
