Payback is a modern-day morality play that shows us Lucifer’s mutiny and Fall—and brings us all the way up to our current, make-or-break moment. Payback is the story of heavenly rivalries and jealousies. It’s the story of living stressed-out in the city and of temptation lurking right down the block. And it’s the story of one angel too big for his breeches.
The devil of Payback is silver-tongued and hilariously petulant. When he soft-shoes to Madonna, channels James Brown and sings Whitney Houston you’ll almost want to join his motley bunch of cast-out cronies. You’ll see him play double-dutch in hell (here staged as a devil-may-care bachelor pad), and you’ll watch him wreak heartbreaking havoc on the lives of do-gooders and gangbangers alike.
With an ending that you won't see coming, Payback is filled with dialogue dripping with shade, mixed with startling dance and modern movement, and set against life-or-death stakes. No other play will show you how the devil plays its tricks to ensnare even the best of us.
