The Maplewood Strollers announces open auditions for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF!

AUDITION NOTICE:

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

WHEN & WHERE: Sunday, March 3, 2-4 p.m. at the Burgdorff Center for Performing Arts, 10 Durand Road, Maplewood, NJ. Monday, March 4, 7-10 p.m. at the Woodland, 60 Woodland Avenue, Maplewood, NJ. Callbacks Tuesday, March 5, 7-10 p.m. at the Burgdorff Center

PERFORMANCE DATES: Fridays and Saturdays from May 3-May 18 at 8pm; Sundays from May 5-May 12 at 2 p.m.

Director Carol Cornicelli and Musical Director Mike Nuzzo seek a multi-ethnic and multi-creed cast to bring the tradition alive for the next generation.

Auditions will consist of

  • reading with other auditioners from the script
  • singing 16-32 bars of a song of your choice—those interested in lead roles should sing an appropriate song from the show. (If your song is not from Fiddler, bring recorded accompaniment or sheet music; accompanist provided)
  • learning a short dance combination
  • Come prepared with a list of your conflicts March 10 - May 19.

Rehearsals will begin March 10 (read-thru, 6-9p) and occur 3-4 times per week. Not all cast members will be required at every rehearsal. From April 22, rehearsals will be every weekday evening and parts of the weekend, and all cast will be required.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN (open casting for all roles):

Tevye (45-65): The likeable, hard-working, pious dairyman who always tries to see the positive side of life. He is a proud patriarch and father of five daughters, closely raised according to the old scriptures. [voice: top F4, bottom Ab2]

Golda (45-60): Tevye's strong-willed wife who wishes for her daughters to have good husbands and live easier than she and Tevye. [voice: top Eb5, bottom A3]

Tzeitel (18-25): Tevye and Golda's eldest daughter , madly in love with Motel. She is loyal to her family but typically challenges the town's traditions. [voice: top D5, bottom B3]

Hodel (18-25): The second eldest daughter, who becomes involved with Perchik. She eventually leaves Anatevka to join Perchik in Siberia. [voice: top E5, bottom B3]

Chava (15-23): The middle daughter who loves to read. Falls in love and runs off with Fydeka, a Russian soldier. [voice: top D5, bottom B3]

Shprintze (10-15): The fouRth eldest daughter who takes lessons at home from Perchik. [voice: top D5, bottom B3]

Bielke (8-13): The youngest daughter. Takes lessons at home from Perchik. [voice: top D5, bottom B3]

Yente (50+): The meddling matchmaker. She is a widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip. [voice: top F5, bottom F3]

Motel (18-25): The poor and meek tailor who shares a deep love with Tzeitel. Sensitive and nervous, but sincere and friendly.  [voice: top F#4, bottom E3]

Perchik (20-30): The outspoken student and visitor to Anatevka, who constantly challenges the traditions of the town. He eventually falls in love with Hodel. [voice: top E4, bottom B2]

Lazar Wolf (40+): The feisty, brawny butcher and the town's wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry Tzeitel. [voice: top F#4, bottom C3]

Avram (40-60): Runs the local bookshop and keeps the town advised of all the news in the area. [voice: top Eb4, bottom D3]

Grandma Tzeitel (60+): Golde's deceased grandmother, who endorses the marriage between Tzeitel and Motel. [voice: top D5, bottom C#4]

Fruma-Sarah (35-45): Lazar's Wolf's deceased first wife. She becomes enraged when her husband plans to wed Tzeitel. [voice: top Eb5, bottom C4]

Constable (35+): Russian military official stationed near Anatevka who knows the villagers well, however he has superficial relationships with the villagers.

Fyedka (20-25): A strong, young Russian soldier who sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava.

ENSEMBLE (villagers and soldiers): A strong ensemble of confident singers with great stage presence (adults and teens, kids also considered); strong dancers for specific numbers (adult & young adult men in particular)
