In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students
- Sister Aloysius Beauvier, (F, 50’s – 60’s): The head nun and principal of St Nicholas Parish and School in the Bronx. Stern, rigid, and driven by a high sense of moral duty. She is also suspicious and cynical and has no tolerance for weakness.
- Father Flynn, (M, 30’s – 40’s): From a working class background, articulate and personable, a Catholic priest at St. Nicholas. He is progressive and friendly—he prides himself on being approachable and amiable with the students at the parish.
- Sister James, (F, 20’s - 30’s): A member of the Sisters of Charity in the Bronx and a new teacher at St. Nicholas. Young and idealistic she is passionate about teaching. Caught between duty and conflict between Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn.
- Mrs. Muller, (F, African-American, 30’s – 40’s): An African-American woman, working class, the mother of Donald Muller, a new student at St. Nicholas and its first African American student. She’s a realist; weary and wary of the world.
