Radcliffe “Ruddy” Roye is a Brooklyn-based photographer whose work documenting the Black Lives Matter movement, from the series “When Living Is a Protest,” appears in Subjective Objective: A Century of Social Photography. Roye is inspired by the lives of grassroots people, especially those of his homeland of Jamaica, and he strives to tell the stories of their victories and ills by capturing them in photographs. Roye’s portraits are frequently produced as collaborations with the people he photographs in tandem with text that further humanizes them and evades their exploitation. Roye was named Time Magazine’s Instagram Photographer of the Year in 2016, and his work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and Ebony, among other distinguished publications.
