Bobby Norfolk
Bobby Norfolk

Emmy-winning storyteller and children’s author Bobby Norfolk presents Back to the Books on Tuesday, March 24, and Thursday, March 26, from 10 to 11AM. He highlights the joy of reading: sparking the imagination, igniting creativity, and honing listening skills through dynamic storytelling. Celebration of Storytelling is open to preschool-aged classes, as well as individuals (appropriate for ages 3 to 5 years old). Children who are not part of a school group must be accompanied by an adult.

A special Teacher Workshop is offered in conjunction with Celebration of Storytelling on Tuesday, March 24, from 4 to 7 PMm. Bobby Norfolk presents Compelling Characters, which gives teachers the tools they need to create their own stories and add new dimensions to their storytelling styles.

Programs are free to participants, made possible by a generous grant from the PNC Foundation and delivered in support of its signature cause in early childhood education, PNC Grow Up Great. Advance registration is required by emailing education@zimmerli.rutgers.edu or calling 848.932.6766.

DAY TRIP: Stickley Museum and Ford Mansion

Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms
Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms

Reserve quickly; limited seating available!

The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms
Step into this utopian setting and learn about Stickley's dreams. This 30-acre National Historic Landmark is the centerpiece of Gustav Stickley’s early twentieth-century country estate. Stickley was a major figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement who combined the roles of designer, manufacturer, architect, publisher, philosopher, and social critic. Participants receive a tour of the Log House (largely restored to its 1910-17 appearance), the only home that was designed and built for his own use. Members also receive a tour of the North Cottage, built in 1901, which is rarely open to the public and houses the museum’s study collection.

Washington’s Headquarters Museum and Ford Mansion
Part of Morristown National Historical Park, the museum commemorates the two winter encampments of General George Washington and the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. This Colonial Revival building was designed by the noted architect John Russell Pope and features a number of exhibits showing furniture, weapons, documents, and other objects from the eighteenth century. Also on the property is the Ford Mansion, a Georgian style home built in the early 1770s for iron manufacturer Jacob Ford, Jr. and his family. Mr. Ford's widow, Theodosia, allowed General Washington to use her home as his headquarters during the winter of 1779-80. Today the house is furnished to reflect how it might have appeared during Washington's stay.

Please note both the Stickley and the Ford Mansion require the use of stairs.

The bus departs promptly at 8:30 AM from the Sears parking lot on Route 1 and plans to return by 7 PM. The cost for the trip, including lunch at Tabor Road Tavern, is $125 for members and $145 for nonmembers. For questions or to reserve, email membership@zimmerli.rutgers.edu.
