When a stranger walks into a bar and orders two drinks, one for himself and one for an unseen friend, it seems like the set up to a tired joke. But instead of a punchline, we're faced urban legends and conspiracy theories—the last great American stories. From the Apollo 11 Moon Landing to the Bush/Gore presidential election to Starbucks to planes crashing into the Twin Towers, Dietz weaves a story that is plausible enough to blur the lines between fact and fiction and foster much post-show discussion. Yankee Tavern is not a study of fact, of what did or didn't happen—it's about the agony of uncertainty.
CAST REQUIREMENTS: (3 Males, 1 Female)
- Adam (Male, late-20s) - A grad student who owns Yankee Tavern -- inherited from his father -- who is getting ready to get married and join the CIA, if not for a trip to see an old professor. Adam kisses Janet in the course of the play.
- Janet (Female, mid-late 20s) - Adam's fiancé. She's smart and level headed and doesn't understand why she doesn't quite trust Adam. Maybe it has to do with his father's barfly friend. Janet kisses Adam in the course of the play.
- Ray (Male, 60s) - Ray was Adam's Dad's best friend. He's an old crank who believes in the conspiracy theories he's always ranting about. He's got a big mouth to match his big heart.
- Palmer (Male, 40s) - A mysterious stranger. Probably a former G-Man, or maybe he's not former. But he's got a bit of an axe to grind, and a stake in the goings on in the bar.
