Mixed Media Workshop
with Nina Nemeth

Explore some of the many mixed media methods using various tools – you might use paint, you might use “bleeding paper,” you might use ink, you might use collage materials from any number of sources! Enjoy eye-opening Monday mornings viewing demos and receiving instruction in different mediums and methods. Then create a work of art using and further exploring what you have learned.

Two Dimensional Art

Work in an atelier setting using any two dimensional medium and style that best suits your personal vision. Whatever form you choose, the task of balancing elements such as color, form, harmony, line, mass, pattern, rhythm, shape, space, texture, tone, value, and volume will be addressed. Traditional or experimental, how you create will be regarded with heightened importance in relation to what you create. Students may use reference materials such as photographs, or take subject matter directly from nature. Individual attention and guidance given each class.

Representational Drawing

This class is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of drawing. With practice over time, one learns how to draw anything from still life to the human form, as well as landscape and abstractions. Class will focus on the primary principals of drawing – line, composition, form, subject and point of view. The class will begin by examining simple line or contour drawing, eventually advancing to hyper realistic renderings of still life and portraits. Each student will have the opportunity to discuss his or her process with the rest of the class, sparking conversation about what each artist’s work means to him.

Pastel Landscape Painting

Pastel is a lively, colorful medium for creating visually breathtaking landscapes. In this class, learn to use pastels to express light, shadow, value, and color, while exploring composition, atmosphere, and aerial perspective. Students are shown how to use the pastel medium in various ways for a number of different effects. Bring sketches or photographs to work from. Learn what to extract from a photo and what to leave behind. Demo given each class. All levels welcome—beginners encouraged!

Basic Drawing

Learn the “ins & outs” of drawing a variety of subject matter, focusing on the formal elements of line, shape, tone, form, space, and depth. Draw the Morris Museum building interiors to study lines and perspective. Practice with still-life to render the look of 3-D through value and shadow. Draw from life the last week observing a live model. All levels welcome!

Drawing in Pen & Ink

Pen and Ink is a portable and fun way to record your observations of what you see everyday around you. Carry a pen in your pocket and a small blank notebook, and you are on your way! Students will make a variety of marks with pen, render solid forms with straight and cross-contour lines, and practicing hatching and cross-hatching exercises. The Museum’s collection of animal specimens will serve as models for drawing. After a few weeks, the class will experiment with ink washes and delve into the art of oriental brush painting.

Water Color Painting

Beginners and continuing students will explore basic techniques, color theory, value, and the elements of a good watercolor painting. Learn controlled wet-into-wet painting. Subjects will include glass, silver, flowers and landscapes. There will be a short demonstration in every class.

Beginning Oil Painting

Session 2: Friday, February 21 – March 21, 2-4:30 PM

Learn the basics of oil painting from the mixing of colors and composition, to blending and creating form using high-lights, mid-tones and shadows. Learn various techniques, including glazing, scumbling, and dry-brush.  Also covered: care and maintenance of your equipment, use of mediums, temperatures and drying times of various colors, and much more. Work from life to help train your eye to see subtle details and colors. Students will be exposed to works of the Masters to inspire and instruct. In the process you will create a beautiful painting that you can proudly display.
