When Prince Edward changes clothes with Tom Canty, the beggar boy, everybody is convinced that Tom is actually the heir to the throne. The true prince, now dressed in rags, is booted out of the palace. From here on
out, the two lads lead an extraordinary existence as each tries to get along in a strange new world.
CAST
- Tom Canty (male, 13) Son of Tom and Mary who are paupers and live in Pudding Lane in Offal Court. He dreams of a better life for himself and his family.
- Father Andrew (male, 21+) Priest in the Offal Court. Sees Tom’s potential and encourages his education.
- John Canty (male, 30+) Tom’s pauper father encourages hard work more than an education.
- Mary Canty (female, 30+) Tom’s Pauper mother who wants the best for her son but is unable to find a way out of their poverty.
- Edgar (male, 21+) A pauper in the Offal Court
- Nan (male, 21+) A pauper in the Offal Court
- Prince (male, 13) Aon of the King and Queen who longs to experience life outside the Palace grounds.
- Guard (male, 21+) Palace Guard who is constantly being challenged by the Prince.
- Lord Herford (male, 21+) Lord at the Palace who guides the Prince in the Royal rules.
- Lady Jane (female, 21+) Lady in Waiting who sympathizes with the Prince’s plight.
- King (male, 30+) Prince’s loving father who is reluctant to give his son any freedom outside the palace.
- Queen (female, 30+) Prince’s more free thinking mother who thinks her soon deserves to experience life outside the palace walls.
- Hugo (male, 21+) Pauper in the Offal Court
- Reggie (male, 21+) Pauper in the Offal Court
- Bet (male, 21+) Pauper in the Offal Court
- Madge (female, 21+) Pauper in the Offal Court
- Kate (female, 21+) Pauper in the Offal Court
- Lady Elizabeth (female, 21+) Lady in Waiting at the Royal Court
- Doctor (male, 30+) Doctor at the Royal court who tried to cure the Prince of his “madness”.
- Miles (male, 21+) Pauper in the Offal Court who helps the Prince with food for his belly and food for his mind.
- Assorted non-speaking, Paupers and Royals of all ages

Those auditioning for the Prince or Tom should be familiar with the section of "Something Out There" and those auditioning for any other roles should be familiar with the section of "Who Is He?".
