The Princeton Festival is an annual month-long celebration of opera, musical theatre, jazz, chamber music, dance, and much more. This year, LDT will perform three works on the Festival’s opening night, the highlight being Artistic Director Graham Lustig’s Appassionato.

The company will present three works: Appassionato, an impassioned response to Franz Liszt’s devilish Mephisto Waltz no. 1 and the serene Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude; Dialogues, a series of duets to a beautifully moving score by Pat Rasile with special guest Alice Teirstein; and Invisible Fields, with live music from members of the Celtic band Trinity. This will be your last chance to see dancer Kristin Naylor (formerly Scott) perform before she retires from the stage.

Lustig created Appassionato in 1994 for the Singapore Dance Theatre and revived the work this season especially to fit the Festival’s Faustian theme. Appassionato is an impassioned response to two piano compositions by Franz Liszt; the devilish Mephisto Waltz no. 1 and the serene Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude. In part one, the pervasive wickedness of the waltz imbues the dancers with malevolence and spite. In part two, the blessings of an inner peace transforms their energies into a more harmonious and contrite ensemble.

The company will also perform Invisible Fields, with live music from the Celtic band Trinity, and Dialogues, a series of duets to a beautifully moving score by Pat Rasile. Support for Invisible Fields has been provided by New Music USA’s Live Music for Dance program. Distinguished dancer and choreographer Alice Teirstein will perform in Dialogues.
