Max Raabe WHEN: Sunday, April 17, at 4:00 PM Be enveloped by the high style, sardonic wit and musical glory of 1920s and 1930s Berlin in this cabaret-style concert featuring charismatic baritone Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester, who embody that era and its music with uncanny precision, drama and irony. Raabe’s unique art lies in revealing the enigmatic intelligence, ambiguity and complexity of the turbulent Weimar Republic’s “German chansons.” A singer of incredible range, he has a singular ability to capture the cunning rasp of the cabaret singer, the confident bel canto hero, the carefree timbre of early jazz and the falsetto of ragtime, all backed by a stellar 12-member band and a repertoire of both German and American standards. At each performance, Raabe and company manage the seemingly impossible: they’re distinctly nostalgic and unmistakably modern—all at the same time. Part of NJPAC’s Cabaret Series.
