 RISING UP AGAINST RACISM—

BACK AT 1964'S SUMMER OF DECISION

A Gloucester County Historical Society's Commemoration of a Historic Year in America's Civil Rights Struggle

In collaboration with the New Jersey Department of State Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission, the Gloucester County Historical Society is sponsoring the "Rising Up Against Racism - Looking Back at 1964's Summer of Decision" program marking the 60th Anniversary of the tumultuous year that was a turning point in the country's civil rights struggle. Admission is free.

The October 8th, 6:30-8:30 pm, program in the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Mullica Hill, NJ, will feature African American scholars and civil rights activists, including Rowan University’s Dr. Lourin Plant; Gloucester County NAACP President Ms. Loretta Winters; and independent scholar and historian Dr. James E. Johnson, followed by audience participation.

We will look back at that year through a national lens with the church-led Freedom Summer that brought students to Mississippi to set up Freedom Schools and help with voter registration; focus on Gloucester County with the life and legacy of Irene Hill-Smith, who marched, protested, and boycotted in downtown Woodbury; and look back at how it impacted urban Camden, leading to the rise of Charles "Poppy" Sharp's Black Peoples Unity Movement (BPUM).

WILLIAM T. FIDURSKI PRESENTS

“SLAVERY & THE REV WAR COMES TO OAK RIDGE”

Homestead Farm at Oak Ridge

Did you know that the Homestead Farm at Oak Ridge historic site probably includes the remains of slave quarters? And that there has also been an identified slave burial site across Oak Ridge Road in Edison? Most people do not know. (This Homestead Farm is commonly known as the former Oak Ridge Golf Pro Shop.)

Centuries earlier at this Historic Homestead at Oak Ridge, then known as the Smith Farm in the area then known as Ash Swamp, in December 1776 the Hessians literally left William Smith bleeding on the floor. Mr. Smith shot the Hessian officer who was “ravishing” his daughter Isabel. Other Hessians came in and shot William Smith, leaving him bleeding on the floor, expecting him to die. Did he?

Come to the opening meeting of the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood on Tuesday evening, September 24th, to find out the answer to this question and to hear the latest details of the slave burial quarters and grounds from Historian William Fidurski. His program will include slides of Oak Ridge and copies of the Smith family & other important information.

Fidurski wrote the application to put the Homestead Farm at Oak Ridge on the State and National Registries. He effectively argued that the entire 208-acres as well as the Homestead and its dwellings be included. And it was: on October 25, 1995 it was approved and placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Biologist and historian Fidurski, a graduate of Rutgers University, completed additional studies at Columbia University and Cornell University and the U of Wisconsin at Madison. During the Vietnam War, he served in the civilian military. He spent two decades as the Senior Investigator for the Federal Drug Agency before retiring. During that time he again wrote an important document on NJ’s Natural areas. Fidurski specializes in the early history of the Stars and Stripes and the New Jersey campaign of 1777. He has been involved in historic preservation efforts such as Bass Farmstead in Hardwick Township, Mount Farm in West Windsor and the Victorian row houses along Essex Street in the Paulus Hook Historic District in Jersey City. Now he is currently investigating the role of the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad in Central NJ as well as being deeply involved in preserving the Homestead Farm at Oak Ridge.

The Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood is thrilled to have Bill Fidurski as the opening speaker for the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood at our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, September 24th. Come to this free, open to the public, meeting to learn about the history of the Homestead Farm at Oak Ridge, more recently known in this area as the Oak Ridge Golf House. Learn about the present needs for preserving not only the Homestead but the slave quarters and burial site. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM and is held at the historic Shady Rest Golf & Country Club, 820 Jerusalem Road (at the corner of Plainfield Avenue) in Scotch Plains. Refreshments and fellowship follow the presentation. For further information, contact Connie Klock at 908-337-7735.

Thursday, September 26 -- Burlington County

On Thursday, September 26th, from 4pm to 6pm outside the City of Bordentown’s Administration building, at Point Breeze – 101 Park Street, we will celebrate Lafayette and show off a beautiful marker that commemorates General Lafayette’s visit to Point Breeze, on September 26th, 1824, exactly 200 years ago to the day! The marker was donated to the BHS by The Lafayette Trail, Inc., and will formally be dedicated at a later date.

We are fortunate to have with us for the ceremony Paul Larson, Chair, New Jersey Lafayette Bicentennial Committee, American Friends of Lafayette; Author John Becica; Michael Halbert, celebrated Lafayette re-enactor who will appear as the General was in 1824. Paul will give some welcoming remarks about the American Friends of Lafayette and the Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour, John will speak about Who was Lafayette, and Why is He Important to Americans, a brief mention of The Lafayette Trail, and his book, Trail Tales, and Lafayette (portrayed by Michael) will talk about his experiences on the Farewell Tour, specifically his visit with Joseph Bonaparte.

This honor and celebration of General Lafayette (also known to many Americans as the Marquis de Lafayette) from the BHS and City of Bordentown is long overdue. Lafayette’s contribution to the independence of our Country was unique, especially given his status in French Society at that time. If you want to honor and learn more about this incredible man, please join us.

After the ceremony at Point Breeze, we invite you to join Lafayette and enjoy the exhibit on Joseph Bonaparte at the BHS’ Friends Meeting House located at 302 Farnsworth Ave. in Bordentown.

Restored Replica Cannon Stands Proudly at the Front Line of Local Revolutionary History

Restoration of a replica Revolutionary War cannon marks the unofficial kickoff for local 250th celebrations on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. For nearly two decades, the cannon that rests on an island in front of Acorn Hall between Morris and Lafayette avenues has reminded the thousands of daily passers-by of the unique and rich Revolutionary history of Morristown. Host to the twice-encamped forces of General George Washington, our local community boasts nationally-significant places like the Ford Mansion, Fort Nonsense, and Jockey Hollow that illustrate to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year how critical Morristown was in our fight for independence.

Placed in the early 2000s by the non-profit Greater Morristown Historic Foundation to bring awareness of local Revolutionary History, the cannon’s wood wheels and frame finally succumbed to their years in the elements. While the Greater Morristown Historic Foundation was founded by longtime philanthropist Richard “Dick” Deskovick of Morris Township, the group disbanded after several significant contributions to our community, including the fountain on Morristown Green and Robert St. Croix sculpted Patriots’ Farewell. In 2023, a concerned group of citizens joined together to not only restore the cannon, but bring further awareness to the history it represents and the notable philanthropy and spirit of our local citizenry, past and present. Ryan Dawson, who led the fundraising efforts said, “the cannon’s condition was brought to my attention by Jennifer Wehring of the Morristown Partnership. She and I knew the community would step in and help once someone took ownership of the project. Between members of the community and some civic organizations we managed to raise the necessary funds to bring the cannon back to life. This was a group effort, and I was confident the residents of Morristown would rise to the occasion.”

The community is invited to join local leadership, donors, neighbors, and Dick Deskovick as we cut the ribbon on this important project, one of the first to usher in what promises to be a memorable “year of celebration” in 2026 and then head to downtown Morristown for Festival on the Green and an afternoon of food and fun.

For more information, contact the Morristown Partnership, (973) 455-1133, or Morris County Historical Society, (973) 267-3465.
