What is The Great
American Songbook?

The Great American
Songbook is basically songs written by American writers with some
additional numbers by others that have been popular through much of the
20th century.
These songs are often
referred to as "standards" - songs performed by cabaret and
club singers as well as by jazz artists. Most of the songs are from the
period 1920-1975, though a performance could include an earlier or
later song, depending on the style.
Many of the songs were
written for Broadway musicals or for films of the period. Among the
most popular songwriters are Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard
Rodgers, Jerome Kern, Jule Styne,
Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, and Fats Waller.
Timothy Maureen Cole,
Emily Thompson, and Jason Adamo will perform some of their favorite
songs from the songbook with pianist John Pivarnik.
As in the past, the
orchestra will supply light refreshments.
