A Nuyorican Night in Two Parts

Nuyorican-Struction
Celebrate the legacy of Nuyorican Poets Café, founded 50 years ago in the East Village of New York City. Our all-star poetic lineup includes Edwin Torres, Emanuel Xavier and co-founder Lois Griffith, hosted by Emmy-winning Executive Director Caridad De La Luz “La Bruja.” With poetry, storytelling and visuals, they’ll explore the history of this cultural icon and peer into the future, as its 100-year-old tenement building undergoes renovations in preparation for a grand reopening in 2026.

Intermission for book signings, merchandise and concessions

Nuyorican Slam Team and EvoluCulture Open Mic
Experience what the Nuyorican Poets Café is most famous for with a spoken word showcase by the official 2024 Nuyorican Slam Team, hosted by Slam Captain Tony McPherson. Then, YOU take the stage to read or perform your own work, in an open mic led by Newark’s own EvoluCulture.
