Moon Phases
New Moon July 5
First Quarter
July 15
Full Moon July 21, 6:17 am Buck Moon
Last Quarter

|
In July, the Full
Moon is the Buck Moon, named after the new antlers that emerge
from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called
Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, and Wyrt Moon.
In July, the Full Moon is
called Buck Moon to
signify the new antlers that emerge on a deer buck’s
forehead around this time.
Male deer, or bucks, shed
their antlers and grow new ones every year. Deer belong to the Cervidae
family along with elk, moose, reindeer, and other species.
Other Native American
tribes call it Salmon Moon, Raspberry Moon, and Thunder
Moon because of the frequent thunderstorms in the summer.
In Celtic, this Moon was
known as the Claiming Moon, Wyrt Moon, Herb Moon, and Mead Moon,
indicating that July is the time to gather herbs (or wyrts) to dry and
use as spices and remedies. The Anglo-Saxons called it the Hay
Moon after the hay harvest in July.

We live in a time when quality science education is more
important than ever and a scientifically literate public is an
essential part of the progress of any community. Planetariums both
inspire and educate people of all ages about our place in the Universe.
They are often a place in which young people become enthused and
inspired to follow a scientific career. Many of today's leading
scientists, engineers, and astronauts chose their careers because they
were captivated by the experience of a planetarium visit
We invite you to be part of shaping the future! Join us
in supporting the Raritan Valley Community College Planetarium
fundraising campaign: Stars are Rising. Help us ignite the
passion for science and space exploration in the hearts and minds of
our rising stars!!
