September Update from Greenwood Gardens

An Abundant Season Awaits

Thanks to the continued summer rain, the garden is as vibrant as ever!  Everywhere you look—the beds at the Reflecting pool Terrace, Croquet Lawn, Garden of the Gods, and the Teahouse—your eyes are greeted with a riot of colorful blooms and full, lush greenery. With the start of the Labor Day weekend, we know that from this bounty, the fiery reds, oranges and yellows of fall are soon to emerge.

Our landscape’s changing colors are not the only reason to come to the garden this fall. We have a wonderful line-up of programming on the horizon including two great lectures—one by the ever-popular Marta McDowell on her new book, Gardening Can Be Murder, on September 28 at 3:00 p.m., and New York Times best-selling author Doug Tallemy, who will deliver an important environmental message in his talk, Nature’s Best Hope, on October 8 at 3:00 p.m.

Other programs worth your while include Creative Arts Day for painting, sketching, and photography on October 11 between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and Composting 101: Putting Your Garden to Bed for the Season with Head of Horticulture Sonia Uyterhoeven on October 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

We hope you will join us for another very special event—An Enchanted Eveningon Friday, September 22, when we will raise a glass in tribute to our late Founding Chairman, Peter P. Blanchard III, whose family dream was to create and operate a garden in Short Hills for the public to enjoy. Peter, along with his partner in life, Sofia A. Blanchard, set out to make the dream of Greenwood Gardens a reality 20 years ago. Our festive anniversary party will feature fine foods and sparkling spirits, live jazz, a silent auction consisting of 20 unique items you won’t want to leave without, strolling in a twilit garden, and the laughter of a community of people who care about nature, beauty, and history.

Come one and all!

Warmest wishes,

Abby O'Neill
Executive Director
