The artwork on display is in direct response to a field trip taken earlier this school year, where students were asked to make observations of the architecture in and around the Chelsea Art District in Manhattan. As a point of departure, this exhibition explores how architectural accreted layers can obscure spatial boundaries and transform each other through juxtaposition. The Chelsea neighborhood, also known for historical architectural landmarks, like the High Line, which itself has been redesigned from its original purpose, resides in a valley of contemporary steel and glass arrangements. Ridge High School art students created artist’s books, collages and photographs playing with concepts of structure. The work introduces relationships that exist among methods of drawing, photography, physical materials, construction and form-making.
Structure: Visualization & Assembly offers the viewer an explanation of how
architecturally accreted layers can obscure spatial boundaries and transform
each other through juxtaposition. Chelsea is known for historical
architectural landmarks like the High Line, which has been redesigned from its
original purpose, and is now a valley of contemporary steel and glass.
