Join us for Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite, and the new Grinch Suite at the Museum's Bickford Theatre this Sunday. The Water Gap Jazz Orchestra is joined by vocalist Nancy Reed and Edward Ellington II, Duke Ellington’s grandson, who will be reading a short version of the Nutcracker story between the movements.

Developed over the past three years by WGJO director Matt Vashlishan, The Grinch Suite features a full 25-minute modern take on this pop culture classic. The new suite includes familiar arrangements such as “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” featuring saxophone, “Welcome Christmas” featuring guitar and clarinets, and “Trim Up the Tree” featuring trumpet, piano, and drums.

Duke Ellington's iconic arrangement of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece is made even more special by the narration of the Nutcracker story by Ellington's own grandson and namesake, Edward Kennedy Ellington II.

Hear WGJO's composer/band leader on how he was inspired to create the Grinch Suite. This interview was conducted by WVIA, the PBS and NPR affiliate for Pennsylvania.

Art on Screen

Behind the Strings

Wednesday, Jan. 11 | 2 & 7:30 PM

When Mao’s Cultural Revolution ended, China’s door cracked open. Four young, classical musicians seized the opportunity to flee to the West as classical music was banned. This film explores how the Shanghai Quartet began a lifetime adventure – studying with great masters, attending Juilliard, and performing at major music festivals and best classical music venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center. This film showcases their lives, how they got to the top and the price they pay.

Art on Screen

Maverick Modigliani

Wednesday, Feb. 8 | 2 & 7:30 PM

This film marks the 100th anniversary of his death and explores the life and remarkable talent of the avant-garde artist Amedeo Modigliani. Living a cinematic and bohemian lifestyle, Modigliani used art to express himself in the midst of his chaotic journey that included drug and alcohol addiction, and womanizing.
