This Week: PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT: SEEDY BUSINESS September 1 – September 30 Sure, everyone thinks that spring is the time for planting seeds, but plants have it all figured out. Many plants drop seeds in the fall— this gives seeds the chance to get used to the cold of winter and gives both birds and mammals opportunity to cache seeds for winter. Click here for more info! Cost: $10 per family or group of 6 or less. Preregistration required.   HOME SCHOOL DAYS FASCINATING FOREST – September 6 at Pyramid Mountain and September 13 at Great Swamp Explore the wonders of the forest habitat and its inhabitants through hands-on activities and a guided walk. Focus on trees, plant life cycles and the jobs of roots, leaves, bark, branches and more. Cost: $15 per child. Preregistration required. OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GROW – September 8 at Frelinghuysen Arboretum Plants need, water, light, air and food to grow but there are plants that can survive without ever putting roots in the ground.  Kids will learn about epiphytes or air plants and “plant” one in the perfect kind of planter they will create. Cost: $10 per child. Preregistration required. THE HARVEST – September 15 at Fosterfields The harvest is an important time of year on the farm. See what grew over the summer and learn important garden skills in this fun class.  Cost: $10 per child. Preregistration required. Sign me up!   CATERPILLAR KIDS September 7 Look under a leaf, inside a flower and up in the air… animals are everywhere! Learn about native plants that butterflies love, the importance of pollinators and all about the insects hidden in the butterfly garden. Check it out! Cost: $5 per person. Preregistration is required.   DASHING DRAGONFLIES September 8 Learn all about these fascinating mini-predators and go for a walk to the pond with one of our naturalists to search for these fabulous fliers.  Participants receive a guide to common species that they can keep! Preregistration is required.   PRE-K NATURE ON THE FARM September 8 Families with pre-K aged kids will take a walk on the trails and around the farm, learning about the natural world around them. Spotlight On: ANTIQUE TRACTOR AND ENGINE DAY September 10 Come to Fosterfields to see antique engines, tractors and other machinery at work on the farm. Watch demonstrations, learn how they run and see how farming would have been done in the past. Check it out! Cost: $10 per person. Preregistration is required. EXPRESSIONS OF NATURE ART SALE AND WALK September 18 Stroll through the gardens and meet local artists recreating the beautiful scenery through their art.  Learn about their techniques, motivations and styles. Artists display a variety of their works for viewing and purchase. Join us! Cost: FREE "BRANCHING OUT!" September 10 – October 15 Young Gardeners can extend the gardening season in the fall and learn how to put the garden to bed for the year.  Over the course of 6 Saturdays, learn what successfully grows in the fall and how to save seeds for next year. Click here for more info!
