Character Gender/Age Range Description
Panch- Adult (male)
The Vice Principal. He is the judge of the
Bee. Mostly calm and collected but has some pent-up anger
and frustrations. Is in love with Rona. Actor must be
able to lead the show as he sets the pace and makes the decisions
on the guest spellers. He must have a strong adlib
ability. Mostly a non-singing role, but may join in on
ensemble vocals.
Rona- Adult (female)
B3-F5 – The moderator and commentator as well as
number-one realtor in Putnam County. Loving and
compassionate. She won in the past and feels she has a
special connection with the spellers. Actor must have great
improvisational skills as she comments on every speller every
time they come up to spell. Also plays the character of
Olive’s Mom.
Shwarzy- 16 + (female)
A3-F5 – The youngest of the spellers. Very
politically driven. Her life is structured and
organized. She is very fearful of disappointing her two
dads. Also plays the character of Leaf’s Mom.
Olive- 16 + (female)
B3-F5 – The shy newcomer of the spellers. Her
life is very lonely as her parents are rarely around. She
loves words and the dictionary.
Barfee -16 + (male)
E4-B5 – The know-it-all of the spellers. He
tends to bully everyone, but it is mostly a defense
mechanism. His allergies and awkward personality make it
difficult for him to make friends. Also plays the character
of Leaf’s Dad.
Coneybear- 16 + (male)
A3-A5 – The home-schooled free spirit of the
spellers. He has a large family of which he is (or thinks he
is) the least smart. He finds random things amusing and also
has ADD. Also plays the character of Carl’s Dad.
Chip- 16 + (male)
C4-B5 – The boy scout of the spellers. Won last
year’s Bee, so he thinks he is better than everyone
else. Going through puberty which makes things awkward for
him as he discovers what attraction is… Also plays the
character of Jesus.
Marcy- 16 + (female)
C4-E5 – The transfer student of the
spellers. She is a major overachiever because that is what
is expected of her. At the same time, she is very tired of
having to be perfect and being a member of every club and playing
every sport and instrument. Actor should hopefully be able
to do multiple special tricks/skills. Also plays the
character of Leaf’s Sister.
Mitch- Adult (male)
E4-A5 – The comfort counselor. He is an
ex-convict which makes him intimidating. Starts off annoyed
to be there, but learns to love the job. Also plays the
characters of Dan Dad and Olive’s Dad.
