BONJ June 12 Concert features World Premiere of "Concerto for Guitar and Strings" by Maestro Robert W. Butts

Maestro Robert W. Butts and the Guitar

Our June 12 concert features classical guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz as soloist for the World Premiere of Maestro Butts's Concerto for Guitar and Strings.

Maestro Butts has composed many works for the guitar. Why?

One reason is because he himself was a guitarist.

As an undergraduate at Montclair State University (then College), his major instrument was the clarinet. His primary instrument, however, was the guitar. But the college did not offer guitar at the time and in fact, he was the first student to study guitar as a minor instrument and to perform in recitals on the guitar.

Maestro Butts has performed as both a classical and popular guitarist. He played lead and rhythm guitar as a country music artist in the 1980s—touring out west and performing in Nashville, Tennessee.

His graduate studies inspired him to study Baroque music. In that area, he picked up the lute—an instrument similar though not the same as the guitar.

He has since composed much music for the guitar. Stanley Alexandrowicz has interpreted his guitar music in the United States, Italy, Poland, and England.

Join us on our season finale concert as we present the world premiere of a brand-new Guitar Concerto, composed by Maestro Robert W. Butts and premiered by internationally touring artist Stanley Alexandrowicz.
