Today we are
revisiting Shakespeare’s play The Two Gentlemen of Verona,
which was a world premiere production that was debuted by Folger
and Fiasco Theater.
Two Gents is brimming with massive themes of romantic love,
camaraderie, identity, and loyalty. With so many big ideas at play,
the physical world of this production embraced simplicity. There
was a very simple scenic setting that allowed the focus to be on
the text of the play and the performances of the company.
As co-director, Jessie
Austrian, who also introduces this selection says, “this style
of performance is thrilling and it’s also scary because we can’t
get away with any tricks…the acting requires honesty and abandon.
Period. It’s a wonderful challenge.”
In the scene shared
today, Proteus’ servant Lance, played here by Tony Award
nominee Andy Grotelueschen, recounts the mournful
goings-on of his family to his faithful dog, Crab, played by Zachary
Fine. Zachary won a Helen Hayes Award for this
performance.
